I visit family in Perry several times a year, and have been aware of the Pattee and their extensive renovations. When my parents booked their trip to Perry, I highly recommended this hotel to them. They are seasoned travelers, and were looking forward to their accommodations while experiencing Iowa for the first time.
Each experience here after, although, has been anything but positive....
When they made their reservation, the person on the other end hemmed and hawed about how the hotel is so booked, making it seem as though they were doing my parents a favor by getting them a room. When they checked in, my husband and I were there, and honestly, there wasn't a single other person in the hotel besides the front desk clerk. Busy, didn't appear so to any of us.
Later that evening, we decided to have drinks in the bar. We were a party of 6, with 2 glasses of wine and 3 mixed drinks. It took 15 minutes for us to get our drinks, and there were maybe a dozen other people in the bar. My mojito was sub par, and when it was delivered the bartender proceeded to inform me of the time it took her to make my drink. Do I care that she has to crush the ice herself, not really... that is why we went to a bar, and didn't have drinks at home! My mother's whiskey sour was just not right at all. Not sure what they made for her!
Dinner was good, and timely, and we had no complaints there. Except for when I ordered another mojito with dinner, and was then told by the waitress that I couldn't have one since, "the mint was bad." So was the mint bad in my first drink, or did the bartender just not want to spend the time making another?
After dinner, we made reservations for all 6 of us to go bowling in the private lanes the next evening. When we arrived for our bowling time, we could hear that there was a large party already in the lanes. I approached the desk, telling the clerk that we were here for our time slot, and was informed that we couldn't bowl because another party was already occupying the lanes. We said that we had made a reservation, and we were told that our reservation had been bumped because a group staying the hotel wanted the lanes. There was no manager on staff, and the person at the front desk had no power to do anything. After much debate and conversation, we were told that the staff would go and inform the group that they needed to "share" their lanes with us. Needless to say, this made all of us uncomfortable, and we left to continue our vacation at our relative's home. We were all really upset with how we were all treated. I live in an area that relies on tourism, and I couldn't believe that the manager was actually telling us, in more words and in a nicer way, that essentially, the larger group's money was worth more than my parents. I have never had a manager approach a situation like that, basically telling us that we were wrong and they were right. And, our name was still in the book to have the bowling lanes at 8pm! Upset, slightly.
My father did talk to the manager, and he did take some money off their room and offer us all breakfast. The situation was fixed, but we are still upset that this scenerio even took place.
In regards to the room, the tv is probably 15 years old, and would turn itself on and off. Their was gum stuck to the dust skirt. The hairdryer in the bathroom worked, as it was hardwired, but none of the other outlets worked.
I hate to say we'll never use the Pattee again, as it really is the only hotel in Perry, but we aren't going to make reservations with the excitement we had the first time. Watch yourself here. You'll be able to sleep at night, but don't settle in expecting a full service hotel.

In response to this review, I would like to go on record that this particular customer and I had a face to face discussion during their stay and the hotel made several amendments to this guests' package to reimburse them properly for a bowling reservation mix-up (also note that this mishap was handled and solved within 15 minutes of their reservation issue). I asked this guest if they were satisfied with the resolution that we agreed upon and was told "yes". It is my number one priority to have all guests of the Hotel Pattee leave our establishment satisfied and happy. This guest told me the adjustments on their bill, along with a full complimentary meal in restitution for the reservation mishap, was more than enough compensation and that they were happy.

Yes, we made an error with their bowling package and we take full responsibility when we do make misktakes. However, I am quite disappointed to read that this guest was still not satisfied to the point of even writing a very hurtful statement regarding the treatment of guests at the Hotel. Please note that ALL of our guests at The Hotel Pattee are treasured visitors and treated with the utmost respect and equality in service. We strive for excellence at The Hotel Pattee, however, we do make mistakes from time to time.....I tried my very best to make amendments for this guest as I would for any guest at the hotel.
