We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Colby, Kansas twice this September (once going out west and then coming back). We have stayed at this place eight times now on trips out west and back and although we have not stayed anywhere else in western Kansas we consider this a very nice place to stay. We are members of the Holiday Inn travel club so we always get a nice, non-smoking room on the first floor with a king bed. The room is spacious and clean and the bed is comfortable. A nice continental breakfast is served in the morning. The front desk has always been courteous and helpful. There are no mini-fridges in the rooms but there is an ice machine down the hall. There are several restaurants within a short distance (we usually eat at Montana's Mikes-decent fare). The next nearest town to the west is Goodland (in Mountain Time Zone whereas Colby is in Central) and to the east is Oakley, both of which, I believe, are a bit smaller than Colby. The H.I. Express does give discounts and the total was a bit under $90.00.

This was one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed at in my life. The pictures on the website made it look like a nice place, but evidently those pictures were taken many years ago.

Upon checking in at the hotel, I had a feeling things were not going to be good. The desk clerk acted as if we were causing her a big inconvenience to take her away from the book she was reading. After we got our key and headed for our room, things got worse. The carpet in the hallway was dirty, grimy, and very worn.

When we entered our room, there was a strong odor, which appeared to be a combination of stale smoke and alcohol. Since we were supposed to be in a non-smoking room, we contacted the front desk, but we were summarily dismissed by the clerk, who told us no other rooms were available.

After retreiving our can of Lysol from the car, were managed to make the room tolerable. My kids headed for the pool, only to return quickly, complaining about the dirty water in the pool.

After a fitful night of sleep, due to the large number of teenagers playing games in the hallway most of the night, we headed to the breakfast bar. More disappointment.

The food (what there was of it), was cold and stale. The plates and silverware were not clean.

Needless to say, we checked out, and put this hotel on our short list of Places to Never Stay Again.

This was supposedly a newer hotel out of all the ones in Colby, but it seemed kind of dirty already. The breakfast was nice and so was the pool. It is located next to Wal-Mart (which is always a plus). I would stay here again, but nothing too impressive.

Colby didn't have much to do, but if you are heading west thru Kansas, this is the last place to stay. Goodland has some hotels, but Colby is definitely bigger.

Great place to stop for a night. I was driving across the country and this was a last minute stop. It was much nicer than expected and the free breakfast was a great way to start off the day. If ever driving through again I would stop here for sure.
