“Flight from the Fleas”

Crowne Plaza Campbell House

A great night's sleep in their Tempurpedic (sp) bed last year led me back to the Crowne Plaza. The rooms are on the older side and the overall look is a salute to horse culture. Since I live in hotels for a third of the year, I've developed small rituals when I walk into a room. (I know you do this!) A kick under the double bed in room 1068 revealed nothing but empty space so I drop to my knees and peek under the bed and wow...popcorn, paper, dust, hair, plastic and stuff I didn't care to examine closely. I've attached the pics. The other bed had boards in place and considering the late hour, I decide to stay put. I spoke to a receptionist who offered to move me but again, it was late, it was for one night only, it's a Crowne Plaza; if that was the only bad thing about the room then leave it be.
So as I lay there watching TV, I notice a little bug land on the pillow next to me. Thinking it's a gnat, I reach over to brush it away and it hops. I sit up, and another one hops on and hops away! A friend's dog once had fleas and so I knew exactly what I was looking at. I moved rooms less than 10 minutes after that. The hotel made no excuses for the fleas and charged me the full rate. I won't be heading back there again. The bedding is great, and the property is convenient but look at the Hyatt downtown or any Hilton property instead. ICHotels needs to really evaluate this property because it lowers their standards.

We stayed at the Cambell house during the spring Keeneland meet and were disappointed. We booked adjoining rooms since we were traveling with my little ones(2 and 1) and my mother in law. The rooms were smallish and had dark decor and small windows. The worst part of our weekend stay was the close proximity to the hospital. We heard ambulance sirens coming in throughout the night-it was awful! Also, the pool area was nice but joined up to a reception area where a large party was going on--kind of weird, and the air temperature was so cold that if your body wasn't submerged you were freezing. Evidently that was to accomodate the reception guests-poor planning there. we are going to the fall meet and will definitely stay elsewhere.

This was a great hotel with great service. The rooms are spacious, the beds were comfortable and the bathroom was nice. When you arrive to your room, there is a bag filled with linen spray, a cd, and an eye mask to help you sleep. There are also black out curtains with a clip to keep out the natural light. The hotel is also conveniently located, and it also has a complimentary hotel shuttle. My only complaint would be the check out process. I had to wait 5 minutes for the clerk to finish his wake up calls before they would check me out.

“Falls short of the mark”

It is clear that the Campbell House is trying. However, its efforts fall short and I would likely look for another hotel upon returning to Lexington. The lobby and common spaces are fairly well appointed. The rooms, however, are quite small and dark. Considering a prime rule of interior design is that light colors make a space appear larger, I am unsure why they would ever think that tobacco brown wallpaper would work in such small rooms with such few lights! The worst flaw, however, was a dirty, moldy shower curtain - it is hardly imaginable that the cleaning staff could have missed this. Other complaints: peeling wallpaper in the bathroom, a damp, musty odor from the AC in the room, too soft pillows (a foam pillow was provided upon my request but made little difference), and did I mention dark? Both the room and the bathroom really need additional lights. On a positive note, it is conveniently located near the airport and major Kentucky highways (we were there for business), the gym was well-equipped (some free weights would have been nice), the internet was free and the staff very pleasant.

While our room was marked "non smoking," it clearly had the smell of smoke as did the entire hallway. It took a while to become accustomed to it. I'm guessing that it used to be the smoking wing and they changed its designation recently since friends in other parts of the hotel didn't have the same issue. The rooms were small, but clean. The bed was very comfortable, though, with soft pillows and a very supportive mattress. We took advantage of the fitness room while we were there, which, while small and experiencing a broken air conditioner, had great high-quality machines.
