“You have to be crazy to stay here!!!!!”

Harbour Towne Inn on the Waterfront

On a recent trip, this B & B was the most expensive, and by far, the worst in hospitality and accommodations, we experienced in a 9-day vacation through Maine and Nova Scotia. George, the owner, was extremely confrontational and due to a reservation mix up on his part, the only room available would never be shown in his brochure. Only because he already had charged us and would not refund the reservation and it was also late in the day, did we agree to stay there and keep the reservation. What a mistake ... the room was musty and moldy smelling and when the toilet backed up, we were handed a plunger!! He sets a new standard for low! In hindsight, we were crazy to have stayed there. Take our word for it ... don't stay at Harbour Towne Inn.

What looked to be a perfectly lovely accommodation from your web-site and the brochure, turned out to be the worst B & B experience I have had in 20 years of staying in them. We were traveling back from Nova Scotia and taking the CAT, the high speed ferry to Bar Harbor. Our initial plans were to travel down to Boothbay on a Thursday night following our arrival back to Bar Harbor on the ferry. Eleven days prior to sailing, the ferry service called to inform us that our sailing had been cancelled and that we would be put on a much later sailing. Knowing this, I called the B & B and made the change to arrive on Friday evening instead. I was told that the proprietor would make the change as we spoke to make the change for us. When we did arrive, he accused us of not showing up the night before and told us that we had been charged. I reminded him of our conversation, which had been lengthy regarding the ferry situation, and he said that he didn't remember. I asked if he had accommodations for us anyway, and he stated that he had Queen (rather than King, as promised, and on the ground floor, not the balcony with waterview which I had paid for) rooms available and asked me very gruffly if I wanted them or not. I asked to see them first and found them off the driveway, very small, and extremely musty smelling. He stated that he didn't care if we took them or not because we already paid for them. He was additionally ornery as well. We decided to stay, as we were two couples, needing two rooms, and it was late. We made the decision then, to skip breakfast, as the thought of having to meet up with him again was too unpleasant to anticipate. I would never recommend this place, and the two B&B's next door looked alot nicer and more welcoming. Please note, that prior to writing this to you on my return home today, I found this Inn listed as your "Inn of the Month" on your website. It truly was the worst experience I or my travelling companions have had with B & B's.

Unfortunately, we booked this Inn without checking w/the Trip Advisor! We went by the online photos, brochure, and the owners pledge that this was the “Best Inn on the Waterfront” with the most “beautiful flowers”. We arrived and were immediately skeptical as we stepped into the dingy looking sitting area with ancient magazines strewn about. The proprietor explained the breakfast times, collected our money, and promptly told us that his wife liked cigarettes more than life and she smoked herself to death.

We were taken up the stairs (old carpet and not swept) to his “Favorite Room” in the Inn. It was the “Queen Room”. This room looks like an old motel room with old flowered paper, a stained old bedspread w/ threads hanging off, no place to put our things. It was so small that when we put our suitcase in, we had a hard time walking in the room. The bathroom was awful! A small dingy motel bathroom - tiny sink on the chrome legs - dirty floor!!! (It was not cleaned the whole time we were there - only the towels changed. And - the room was not vacuumed either) No place for our things. We wanted to go somewhere else, but since our money for the three days was collected at the door, we did not think we could get a refund at this point and it was a busy tourist season and we probably would not have found another place.

After listening to the old window air conditioner rattle all night right next to my ear, we went downstairs for “breakfast”. This breakfast consisted of cereal that had probably been in the Tupperware all summer, wrinkled fruit that had been in the refrig, bagels, and a cheap boxed coffee cake.

If it hadn’t cost us so much, it would have been almost comical. Stay somewhere else!!

“Great location-But Very OVERPRICED!!”

Harbour Towne Inn on the Waterfront

When you visit a beautiful town like Boothbay Harbor, you don't exspect to be greeted at the front door with a note and key in the mail box to let yourself in. The Harbor Towne Inn is advertised on the front lawn, and a brochure as the finest B&B on the waterfront, somebody has got it wrong!!
Mr Thomas and the Inn were extemely tired and worn. Mr Thomas was very Brusque with his help and to his quests. Our room had a very poor view, the room looked outdated, worn and dreary. The decor was shabby, terrible fabrics, lack of theme, not pulled together. One night the fire alarm went off around 11:30, and all the quests were wandering around in the dark outside, it lasted about 2 hours before the very confused Inn Keeper could get it turned off. One of the other quests said that they had one way into their room and an air-conditioner blocking the other exit to a very narrow fire escape. For $300. a night and $75 for each additionial person it is a rip off. We would never stay there again. Mr. Thomas was not at all affable.

“Poor House”

We were very disappointed in our recent stay at this bed and breakfast. We found that the host was in hospitable and brusque in his dealings with us and was not at all "affable".
The breakfast that was served buffet style was "cheap" and "tacky" and not what is usual at a real bed and breakfast setup. I would definitely not reccoment this place.
