For the last 8-9 years my family and I have been traveling up to the Casco, Maine, area to either visit our children at camp and or pick them up at the end of camp. Almost every year we have stayed in the Maplewood Inn as it was one of the closest motels to the camp. We enjoyed staying in the motel rooms. They were adequate. One time my husband and I had to stay in the B&B. It was horrible! The owner, Renee was not friendly and it was uncomfortable staying in the B&B. The motel rooms are better because you won't see the owner much. In the past I had always made reservations and then we paid for our room when we arrived. I made reservations for this Tuesday to pick my son up from camp as his counseling job is ending. He ended up getting a ride home from another camper. When I called to cancel the reservation, 48 hours in advance, I was told I could not cancel. I contacted my credit card company and they are going to suspend the charges, however, it appears as though I wasn't charged for the room until I called to cancel. After giving this motel my business for over 8 years I am outraged that they would charge my credit card for the room when I called to canccel. I have never been charged for a room when I canceled the reservation. This motel must be desperate for money if they treat repeat customers in this fashion. Don't stay there unless you are desperate and if you do plan to stay there, plan to pay for your room even if you have to cancel.

For all of the 13 years we are running the Maplewood Inn & Motel, our cancellation policy - 1 week prior to arrival and a $20 cancellation fee (which is standard for our type of business)- has not changed. The recent changes are merely a rewording and a new paragraph about pets. With every confirmation -in writing- we encourage the guest to familiarize him or herself with our cancellation policy; we include a link directly to the Policies Page on our web site. For online reservations that same link is right next to the "Agree" and the "Submit"-button, so guests can read them before they click. In case of a late cancellation (less than 1 week prior to arrival) the guest is responsible for the payment but we will always try hard to re-rent the room. Some times -like in the case this review refers too- we waive the entire amount and cancellation fee even if we could not re-rent the room and end up with a loss. We try to be as open as possible by keeping the customer posted by phone or -in this case- by e-mail about the outcome.

You cannot successfully run a B&B for over 13 years and be a very unpleasant person. I am not! Thousands of guests, many of them return customers- can testify to that. On our website we show unsolicited thank-you notes that people leave in the room for us. We know for a fact that we are a fine place to stay, because most of our guests tell us so! You're welcome anytime.
