We spent a weekend at the Jordan Grand Hotel in mid-March '05 to ski at Sunday River Ski resort. The hotel is located 'mid-mountain' and can only be accessed via a 5 mile drive along a badly paved road.
The official parking lot for the hotel is not paved and is located a considerable distance from the hotel itself; there is no shuttle service from the ‘mud and puddle’ lot to the hotel. We, like most guests parked along the driveway to the hotel, to avoid the long walk. The driveway turned out to be a fire lane, and after two days and nights, parked in the same location, our car was towed without warning (despite the hotel having our car reg and contact number on file). The front desk manager lied about the car being located at the towing company's yard in Bethel, until we paid the $50 release fee! She then told us it was just moved to the lower parking lot. Having spoken to other guests who’s car was also towed, we found out she waived their fee so we demanded ours be refunded too - which it promptly was.
We were irritated that:
1) We were not warned or asked to move it (leading us to believe it was ok to park where we were).
2) The manager lied about the vehicle's location until payment was received.
3) The manager did not treat all guests the same, some she charged, others she did not.
4) The hotel did not provide a closer, paved parking lot or a shuttle from the lot.
Other things that I didn't like about the resort:
If you plan on arriving before 6:00PM, don't expect your room to be ready - we witnessed a lot of families will young children having to wait until 6pm before they could check in. A lot of families claimed to have arranged for early check in which was not honored by the hotel.
If you plan on arriving after 11:30PM, don't expect a valet for ski equipment, you will have to carry them up one floor to the storage room and wait for hotel security to store them away.
The hotel layout is poor. Rooms are located off a single corridor which takes 5 minutes to walk end to end. If your room is located at or near the end of this corridor expect a long walk in your ski boots to the ski storage area which is located on the second floor near the lobby entrance.
The studio units have a pull out sofa bed and a pull down Murphy bed. They are basic in style and function and we found ours to be clean albeit space. Our unit did not have a coffee maker, although one was brought when we requested it.
The hotel charges $35 for any check out later than 10:30AM.
Guests are allowed use the pool and hot tub facilities after checking out which is useful if you plan to ski on your last day. However, the locker area is tiny. The lockers themselves are also tiny - they cannot hold more that two ski boots!
Overall I disliked this hotel because it is over priced for what it is and what it claims to be. It charges 5 star prices for a 2 star service. If I were ever to come back to this area, I would try and find a local Inn or B&B to stay at rather than stay at the Grand Jordan again.
On the plus side - the skiing was great!
