We had an amazing stay at the Riverside Motel. My father had worked there for the Staples family 72 years ago when he was 16 and, at 88, expressed an interest in revisiting. After speaking with the owner, Geoff Scimone, to determine that I had the right place, he expressed an interest in my father’s situation. Little did we realize what he had in mind and how special the motel (and owner) were.
Driving in to the Riverside was beautiful. It is the only hotel on Perkins Cove and is located on 5 landscaped acres with Adirondack chairs set out for guests on the lawn extending down to the cove. I could see that it was a special, private place. Upon arriving early, my dad said hello to the lady cleaning the rooms and she said they had been waiting for him. He thought he had misunderstood.
Troy, at the reception desk, showed us to coffee and fresh muffins and doughnuts as we checked in. The rooms were wonderful, entering on ground level and culminating in a two story high balcony with an incredible view overlooking picturesque Perkins Cove, where lobster and fishing boats come and go.
After a short walk across the nearby bridge to the Perkins Cove shops, art galleries and restaurants, we continued along the adjacent paved Marginal Way walk. It was well suited for walking with great views and lots of benches and shade leading into the town of Ogunquit and its beaches.
Upon returning to the hotel I received a call from Geoff saying he would like to stop by. A few minutes later there was a knock at my parent’s door. Geoff stood there with the entire Riverside staff and a lady video taping the event. My dad was speechless. After asking my father questions about his experiences in 1940 and saying how honored they were to have him return, they presented him with a specially made shirt saying “Riverside Motel Class of 1940” and an artist’s representation of Perkins Cove in a leather frame. It was amazing.
I can’t thank the Riverside and its staff enough for a special stay that we will remember forever. My father cannot stop talking about his great stay there, it really meant a lot to him. He wants to return next year. I can understand why the Riverside has guests that have returned every year for more than 50 years running. If you are looking for a special place above and beyond the usual hotel experience, I can’t recommend the Riverside, along with its owner and staff, enough.
All rooms are quiet and private with great views.
