If you've ever stayed on Cape Cod, you are well aware that unless you want to dish out $450/night, your choice of nicer properties is basically non-existant. The hotels know they have a captured market, so this allows them to charge inflated prices for relatively cruddy rooms/accomodations. Most of these locations are independent motels of some nature, but a few do present the moniker of a known brand...
...which brings me to the review of the Four Points Sheraton. Its obvious that Sheraton has little to do with running this property, because I'd hope it would be in better shape.
I'll cover a few of the positive points first. The staff, while typically short and often not very informative, were friendly and courteous, at the very least. Judy at the front desk was particularly nice, and was more 'talkative' than a couple other staff members. Although, all staff did have a tendency to ignore guests in favor of other tasks (when we first arrived at the hotel around 11:30, we waited with another guest for 5 minutes befor someone showed up at the desk).
The room, while far from impressive, was well accomodated, offering plenty of towels, ample sitting furniture, and a larger-than-expected fridge (4 foot model). The beds were comfortable enough, but not the best I've slept in. The size of the room and bathroom were also quite ample. The flat panel HD TV was a nice addition, but we didn't watch much TV anyway.
Unlike a vast majority of hotels and B&B's on the Cape, the Four Points does not require a multi-night booking during 'peak' season (May - Sept.). So, even with the $250-350/night charge, it still could register as 'cheap' on the Cape.
The hotel does have two pools...and indoor and an outdoor. The outdoor looked typical, but nice. We did not see the indoor, but heard some people complaining that the area was not well kept.
Finally, a bill was slid under our door when before we woke up
Now, for a few negatives.
- Check-in was less than accomodating. Arrived at 11:30, asked about an early check in, told no rooms were available (hard to believe, since check-out is at 11...). Came back at 4 (an hour after the 3 o'clock check-in time), and had to wait 10 minutes so they could check to see if our room was ready (??).
- The bed linens were stained in a number of places. Sadly we did not notice this til we woke up.
- The hallways are absolutely gross. Dank, dingy, dirty carpets with the overwhelming smell of chlorine (note: our room was an outside-facing room, yet the hall still smelled like the pool), as well as very low lighting. More of a bad motel feel to it.
- The room, itself, was not all that clean and it was very outdated. We found some cough drops strewn about near a chair, the toilet seat had waterspots all over it, and the tub had some mold/mildem in the corners and grouting. There was also a watermark left by a cup or mug on one of the counters...it wasn't permanant either. Just little things that let you know the cleaning staff basically change the sheets and move on to the next room.
- The hotel is a hotel, but its set up more like a motel, since there's no way to reach the guest rooms from the lobby, unless you cut through the pool area.
- The AC in the room was horrid. We got in the room, and it was very hot, since the AC wasn't on. We turned it on, and an hour later, it was still as hot as it was before it was on. We left, came back later that night, and the room was cooler, but still a little humid.
- The location of the hotel, while not hard to find, is only convenient if you plan on spending your time on the beach (its only a 2 minute drive from the Cape Cod Nat'l Seashore). Otherwise, Eastham isn't really near any of the typical Cape tourist areas (Hyannis, Provincetown, etc.). And because the hotel is only two stories and right next to the major state highway on the Cape, don't expect any nice views.
So, in short, the hotel is a 'better' Cape Cod hotel in a few different areas, but don't expect to be blown away by it either. Still, for the $300 average charge per night, the value is down in the dumps.
