“Perfect Winter Getaway”

Blantyre

9 Jan 2008

Blantyre is best known for its sumptuous service during the summer and fall in the beautiful Berkshires. A few years ago, it began staying open year-round, and added winter activities and facilities to its property. We recently spent 5 days there, our first time there in the winter - and it was perfect. There is an ice rink on site with a handsome "warming hut" with skates, hot chocolate, and other entertainment. The spa is open with massages, hot tub, exercise room and other entertainment. The rooms are spacious and extremely well appointed. And the main house, with its 5 star restaurant and massive wine collection, is delightful with its many fireplaces and very attentive service - check out the periodic wine tastings of the best wines in the world (Screaming Eagle and Margaux, for example). Perhaps best of all, the entire area is so quiet and relaxed in the winter, with just enough restaurants and museums open to be a diversion if needed. A great place to stay anytime, including winter.

We spent a wonderful three days at Blantyre in July 2007 and were anxious to see how the resort fared in the cold, winter months. Using a friend's milestone birthday as an excuse to go back, we are thrilled that we did! Even more beautiful in the winter, we were warmly welcomed back by the fabulous staff - many of whom remembered us by name. Because our room did not have the king bed we had requested we were graciously upgraded to the room of all rooms, the Paterson suite. The amenities were fabulous, and even included a thoughtful snow concierge who brought out a hot chocolate menu and lit the fire for us as we skated around the ice scating rink - albeit tentatively. While there were few other couples there and we felt like we had the entire estate to ourselves, the resort had a full staff available at all times - definitely no skeleton crew! Even the pianist plays nightly, whether there is one guest or fifty. This place is amazing in the summer, but takes on an entirely magical aura in the winter. We were there the weekend before Christmas and we left there believing in both Santa and heaven on earth.....

“Solid as expected”

Spent 2 really good nights at Blantyre in May of 2007. Everything is pretty much as expected from a Relais Chateaux. Grounds, food, service, room quality- everything is first rate. I would say among all the Relais Chateaux on the east coast, the thing that distinguished this one was the pool area. Yeah, kind of a strange thing to point out, but that was how it distinguished itself.

I think this is place is actually a good value as well, at least for RC. You can stay in a room for around $600 a night, which sounds crazy when you're speaking of value, but the luxury travel has gotten a bit out of hand, and there are plenty of places charging this much that are much worse than Blantyre.

“A SIX star property!”

Blantyre

This Relais & Chateaux property raises the bar for small inns everywhere. From the welcoming bottle of champagne on ice after a long drive to the room stocked with books, DVD's, and CD's, no detail is too small for excellence in implementation.
There is much to do in and on the property and in the immediate vicinity. Despite a run of cold and cloudy weather, we were never at a loss for cultural, recreatonal, and shopping pursuits.
Our room (Shipton) was roomy and homey. A well designed washroom and dressing area was equipped with Kiehl's amenities and plush, soft towels. Climbing to the top of the high mattress was a challenge rewarded by wonderful sleeps in quiet and dark quarters.
We had two dinners at the five/six star restaurant and were always delighted wtth fabulous fare, an extensive wine list with something for everyone and over-the-top service. A before dinner drink in the antique-filled music room was graced with a selection of canapes and a chance to peruse the menu.
Dinner itself was an event in itself. The culinary delghts were made more memorable by the friendly and attentive international staff.
The included continental breakfasts were taken in a lovely room overlookiing the gardens. While service was occasionally disjointed, the offerings of fresh fruit salad, warm pastries, and fresh bodum coffee provided a delicious start to the day.
A tour of the breakfast room by Anne, the owner, reinforced that every guest was appreciated and to be pampered at all times. She even gave me a personal tour of the extensive wine cellar!
Make no mistake.-- this is not a cheap place to stay and the 20% added for service might appear to be excessive. However the value for money equation is just about perfect.
I'd go back in a heartbeat.

We spent a three-day winter weekend at the Blantyre, and our entire experience was wonderful. We stayed in the Carriage House, which was actually perfect because we could just walk in our robes to the spa/jacuzzi (to work out or hang out eating complimentary dove bars and other treats). The room itself was very nice, with lots of amenities (dvd library, great books, kiehl's products galore) and a very comfy bed. The food is delicious and there is a a very yummy breakfast.

We took advantage of everything they offered, including the ice skating and cross country skiing, and it was all terrific.

The Blantyre has many little surprises waiting for you and it is a perfect romantic getaway! A class act.
