January 14, 2010 – In the Boston area on business, I had the opportunity to spend three nights at the Boston Marriott Newton hotel. The hotel is located at the intersection of I90 (Mass Pike) and I95 and is on the east bank of the Charles River. It took less than 30 minutes to reach the hotel from Boston Logan airport during evening rush-hour.
Check in was fast, even by Marriott standards. Walking in the front door I was greeted and asked if I was an Elite member – yes. Giving my name I was handed my room key and asked if I needed any assistance, which I did not. The whole process took about 15 seconds – great!
My room was 654 which faced the parking lot. I believe odd number rooms face the river which would be a better view. Traveling by myself, it did not matter. The room appeared to have been completely refurbished very recently. Absolutely everything was new. The décor was contemporary and everything very functional. It was a very comfortable room. My room was perfectly clean when I arrived and the housekeeper kept it that way.
The room had an excellent work desk with good lighting, power outlets, and a comfortable office-style chair. The desk had a plug-in panel to connect a laptop to the TV display. There were no cables in the room to make the connection so I did not use this feature. I connected to the internet via the hotel’s wireless network. The cost is $12.95 per day. I personally wish full-service Marriott hotels would eliminate the charge for an internet service. The connection worked perfectly and was very fast. I ran the Speakeasy internet speed test and download speed was 8 MBS and upload speed 6 MBS, just about the fastest I have ever seen in a hotel!
The room had a large flat screen high definition TV, but only standard definition programming was available. The picture quality was in my opinion, poor. I did not have much time to watch TV or I would have complained.
The bed appeared to be brand new, was firm and very comfortable. Besides lamps on the night stands, the headboard had LED reading lights. Pillows and linens were all excellent quality. I slept well all three nights.
My room was very quiet. I did not hear any other guests throughout my stay, even though I think all rooms around mine were occupied. I knocked on both walls and they appeared to be concrete. A quiet room is very important to me so this was much appreciated.
I ordered room service one evening and the food arrived faster than promised. The quality was very good and the quantity was large. I had breakfast each morning in the concierge lounge. An egg quiche was available each morning along with oatmeal, fresh fruit, juices, breads, boiled eggs, tea and coffee. The one evening I visited, the lounge offered puff pastries stuffed with meat, cheese and crackers and raw vegetables with dip. Later in the evening a selection of deserts was offered.
The hotel has a very large exercise room which overlooks the indoor pool. The equipment looked very new. The treadmills and stationary bicycles had TV monitors to help pass the time. There were also free weights and weight training machines. The pool seemed large enough to swim laps.
Service at the hotel was excellent. Everyone that I came in contact with was friendly and helpful. I had a minor problem with my bill and it was corrected immediately with an apology.
Everything about my stay was excellent and I can recommend the hotel highly.
