“Strange Odor...”

Governor Bradford on the Harbour

Booked a room for a Friday / Saturday stay in mid October mostly because the price was very reasonable compared to other properties in the area.

The Hotel itself was easy to find and looked nice enough... nothing looked outwardly wrong with it on the drive-up. We were given a ground-level room and upon first opening the door we were hit with an absolutely overwhelming smell like cleaning products and super concentrated sickly-sweet air freshener mixed with stale cigarette smoke. This wasn't your garden-variety odor... this was really overpowering. The kind that gives you a headache immediately.

We let the room air out for a while, and then left for the evening with the air circulating... but it was just as bad or worse when we got back a few hours later.

The front desk person seemed to be very accomodating in moving us to a different room when we requested it... but on the way back from the front office we ran into the people who were moving out of the room they had given us... they were moving out to get away from the smell.

So... we asked again but this time they had nowhere to move us to. Again the person at the front desk was very accomodating. They refunded our money without penalty fairly late at night when they had obviously booked to near capacity, so I will give them credit for that.

All of the rooms that seemed to be plagued with the smell problems seemed to be ground level rooms, so I'm wondering if they were, at some point, flooded and the odor was air freshener used in attempt to cover the mildew or whatnot in the carpet.

Might be a good place to stay if you get a room higher up on the property, I'm not sure.

Overpriced. Charge for location not standard. Very, very basic motel. Not a hotel. No privacy. Very low quality. Less than one star. Poor maintenance on building. Disinterested staff. Bathrooms a disgrace.

Room was WAY overpriced for what we got which was a damp, smelly and outdated hotel room with the worst pillows (two small per bed only) that I have experienced in a long time. Bathroom smelled faintly of urine.

“I'd stay here again, but. . .”

Our family of 5 stayed here for 2 nights in early August 2006. Before I go on, let me say that I would stay here again although my list of rants is a lot longer than my list of raves.

The problems:
--The toilet ran continously unless we lifted the tank lid to
manually fix the flap.
--The continental breakfast is truly only muffins/pastries,
coffee and juice. There is nowhere in the lobby to eat it.
--The decor is dated and rooms are showing wear. Cleanliness
was marginal but acceptable. The room had that "hotel smell",
a little musty, but not terrible. Our air conditioner worked OK.
--There is not enough parking in the hotel lot. If you get in after
about 7:00, you have to park in a city lot across the street.
The parking is free, however.
--There were no pool towels at poolside, and we had trouble
getting them from the front desk. The pool was older, but
decent sized and deep.
--The in room fridge is about 1 cubic foot in size. It was not
plugged in when we arrived.
--Beds are doubles not queens.

And now for the positive:
--LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION. We stayed at many nicer
hotels during our 2 weeks in New Enlgland, but in none of
them could we open the curtains in the morning to see a sight
like the sun rising over Plymouth Harbor with the Mayflower II
moored a block away. Plymouth Rock, several other sites,
town shops and harbor restaurants are all within view and
easy walking distance.
--The staff was friendly and helpful with directions, restaurant
recommendations etc.
--The sink was outside the bathroom, and you could pull a
curtain to separate it from the rest of the room. This was
wonderful with 5 people sharing a room and getting up at
different times. It created a little dressing room and also
blocked the light from the sink and mirror area and kept
it from waking up those still sleeping.

Bottom line, despite its drawbacks I would stay here again.
My 15 year old daughter summed it up, "The breakfast was lousy and it was really dated, but it was worth it." Be sure to spend the extra money for a second or third floor harbor view room (our 2nd floor room was $130.50 AAA rate plus tax and rollaway) and enjoy a location and scenery that is unsurpassed. Then get pampered at your next hotel.

We chose to stay at the Governor Bradford because of its location, which is perfect.
Unfortunately nothing about the motel matches up to this fundamental and it is overpriced considering the quality (or lack of it) provided.
As others have written, the rooms are in a very poor state of repair and well overdue for refurbishment. Cleanliness is questionable and the plumbing leaves much to be desired.
The included breakfast is an insult - a couple of varieties of pastry and a cup of coffee with powdered milk are available to carry back to your room, by which time the coffee's cold.
Thankfully we were only staying for one night.
