We stayed here because we wanted a suite (separate bedroom and sleeper sofa in other room). Maybe we've been spoiled by all our stays at various Residence Inns, but this place was just drab and depressing. When we walked in, we were immediately hit by an awful, musty odor. For the first time in my life, I left a hotel in order to buy room deodorizer. I bought a scent-neutralizer spray and also one of those sprays that emits a scent every x minutes (we chose the most frequent setting--every 9 mins, I think). That took care of the odor problem, thank goodness.
The suite is on two levels. The downstairs was narrow with well-worn furniture. Neither the sleeper sofa nor the rollaway bed was made up (despite our letting them know we'd be using them), but the hotel did provide sheets. The bathroom was big and seemed clean. The upstairs bedroom also seemed as if it had been refurbished more recently than the downstairs. It was fine once we got rid of the odor. The mattress was OK. Woke up with a slight backache the second day, but that's not unusual. The TV had a paucity of channels. But, hey, what kids don't want to watch a "Pawn Stars" marathon?
The facilities are dated and also on the depressing side. Very dark indoor pool area. I sat outside on the patio and watched the children (age 12 and 13, NOT little kids!) through the screen so I wouldn't have to sit in the gloomy pool area. The tennis courts were fine for our purposes (just batting the ball around) but would be a problem for real games since some prominent cracks make the ball bounce in rather interesting directions. Still, a tennis court wasn't a must-have for us, so that was of minor import.
The staff seem young and perhaps new to the business. A gentleman checking in before me asked the receptionist to recommend a place to have dinner that night, and she seemed befuddled by the request. She did eventually come up with the name of a restaurant that "seemed like it's popular," but it didn't seem she had ever actually been there. The breakfast area was fine. Not quite as dark as the rest of the lodgings, which was nice. Average fare--bagels and English muffins and boxed cereals. They'll also make waffles for you. Based on others' reviews, I had talked up Dottie the Waffle Lady (I think that's her name...), but we saw no signs of any welcoming waffler. The first day, waffles were provided by a not-terribly-interested young woman (the kids said the waffles were "OK"); the second day it was an older woman (Dottie?), but the kids chose not to have them. Don't know whether the quality would have been better with her. I did notice she seemed put out when one family asked for two waffles apiece. ("Well, I'll see what I can do...") Be sure to avoid the yogurt. I'm *still* trying to get the cloying taste out of my mouth.
I went out to the car one evening and was met by a haze of pot smoke. Glad I was able to find my way back in! No big deal except I also noticed the night receptionist smoking in front of the hotel entrance. I'm going to assume it was standard tobacco.
The location of the hotel/motel is fine. It was easy to access Rockport and Gloucester. It would be a long walk into Rockport--at least when the temperatures are high. We drove there both days (bring lots of quarters for parking!).
We love the area, but we will never go back to Rockport Inn and Suites again. After having immensely enjoyed a few days in Maine beforehand, this place really brought us down. It was depressing to go back there each evening, and we spent as little time there as possible. Thank goodness we only had to stay two nights.
Full disclosure: It rained on and off during our stay, so that may have upped the depression factor. It didn't seem any better during the bouts of sunshine, though.

First off, please accept my personal apology that your trip to Rockport was depressing. We've had so little rain. Sorry it came during your time. We work hard to not only provide very clean rooms but outstanding service as well. I only wish I had the opportunity to make things better for you while you were here. That being said, we still fell quite badly.
