I really don’t understand the raving reviews on this B&B – I’m not saying it is bad but it is certainly not as fantastic as the reviews suggest.

We stayed there for 8 nights and while our room was twee (The Martha in the Painted Lady). The décor was not sumptuous, as advertised on the website. I was not impressed by having a bath in the bedroom (some might disagree) but it did make the room steamy. There was a shower room, the towel rail was broken so nowhere to put towels and only half of the ceiling was painted. There was air-conditioning in the room was badly fitted and the gaps filled with cardboard, so overall hardly luxurious.

We had to cross the drive each morning to go to breakfast in the Belfry Inn. Every day this was scrambled eggs, day 1 with biscuits, day 2 with hash browns, day 3 with hash browns mixed in, day 4 with some red stuff (possibly peppers) added, day 5 bacon bits added and so the list went on. The toaster took over 5 minutes and even then the bread was not brown. There was always a bowl of melon and every other day some bananas.

The owner was slightly odd while not quite Basil Fawlty he had a distinct lean towards Sparky Griswold from the National Lampoon films. There was a definite twitch!! On the first evening when neither of our bedside lights worked he came immediately to sort it out but did stress that it certainly shouldn’t have happened as he had himself changed the bulbs – it turned out that the fuses had blown. A wedding was held there on the Saturday and he was in a panic all of Friday, turning the dining room into an additional bedroom. He must have been making a mint from this because everyone other than the wedding party and guests were just an inconvenience.

Although there was a café/bar there were no ashtrays for the smokers. The owner provided one on the back porch and this was not emptied for the duration of our stay.

After reading previous reviews I was really looking forward to staying at the Belfry and all in all it was pleasant but in order to meet the expectations gained from the Belfry’s website and reviews improvements are certainly needed.

“A Wonderful Weekend”

My boyfriend and I stayed her the weekend before Christmas, just to get away. It was the most delightful and wonderful weekend, and it started as soon as we got to the Belfry Inn. We stayed at the Abbey in the Tuesday Room, which was gorgeous and if you get a chance-- book this room! The cathedral ceilings, stained glass windows, fireplace, blue walls and gorgeous two person tub with stained glass....we could have stayed in the room all weekend.

We did a weekend package and ate at the Painted Lady the first night. It was quite the unique place, with whimsical decor and great food. Our breakfast the next morning was prepared by the owner, who had us set up in front of the fire in the Bistro (in the Abbey)...he made us spinach omelets and gave us tips for our day. That night we ate at the Abbey, again at the fire...and after sat upstairs in the loft by the Christmas tree, sipping wine and listening to local people finishing dinner and singing carols with the piano player.

The owner is fantastic, the service wonderful, our room an absolute delight and I am recommending this as a perfect getaway spot!

My wife and I stayed at the Belfry Inn for two nights. We were in the Painted Lady portion of the hotel which is next door to the main inn. It was a very comfortable room and the bed was great. There was a slight problem with a circuit breaker but we were able to fix it easily and things like that are to be expected with older inns. The staff were very friendly if a bit harried. The breakfast was good.

“Phenomenal Place for a Wedding - FULL MARKS”

Belfry Inne and Bistro

31 Oct 2007

We had our wedding at the Belfry this year. We had about 90 people and it was phenomenal. Our guests took the 6 rooms in
the Belfry and some at The Painted Lady next door. The owner Chris Wilson is a master at his work. The meal was tremendous and the presentation great. Our server Skip very attentive as were the other servers at the location. The lay out of the location is ideal for something that does not look like the "same old hotel banquet space" that can be quite unimaginative unless there is a very high decorating budget to change four walls and old tiles ceilings!
The Belfry has great character. The Jaccuzi suites are very comfortable and their bath products tremendously relaxing.
Have eaten there a number of times in the past as well. The evening meals have character and the deserts are quite unique.
As a B&B / Inn so to speak the am breakfasts are standard - nothing out of the ordinary BUT go there for the entire experience. For a special function great! The band we had sounded good in the space and the veranda outside ideal to let people mingle and catch some rays after a great meal!
We will return to visit in the future. I'm not sure where the negative reviews come from in some of these other postings. make advance reservations for the full treatment too! If you are a walk in you have less change of getting a table of your choice!
Great location!!! The guest rooms are SOO different if you are into art and architecture - one wants to stay in them all as they are all different! Great job!

This inn and restaurant is located in an old Catholic church. The owner has done a beautiful job making it into a cozy inn and restaurant. Atmosphere abounds, all the people who helped us were friendly but not intrusive, and the food was exceptional. I would highly recommend this inn and restaurant to anyone within driving distance of Sandwich, MA.
