I stayed in this hotel for one night on labor day weekend. I first saw the Yellow Room was available for the whole weekend on Orbitz for $225 but it wouldn't let me book for one night. I called the hotel directly and was told that I couldn't have the Yellow Room for one night because they were hoping to rent it for the whole weekend, but the Garden Room was available. She quoted me $275 a night, which I balked at because their website states the max price is $250, so she knocked it down to $250. When I showed up she gave me the Yellow Room after all but for $250. I said I saw that room on Orbitz for $225 a night, and she denied that was possible. I said I wanted the Garden Room because there was a tv but she said it was booked and the rooms were fungible. She offered to call around to see if I could stay elsewhere but she doubted it and since it was labor day weekend I "should be flexible." So I did stay, but was peeved. Also, we wanted to borrow the bikes and were told they were out for repairs. On the plus side it is very close walking distance to the beach, shops and ferry. The house and the room were small but clean and pleasant and nicely furnished. The breakfast was fine: cereal and yogurt.

“Great Fun for Solo Travelers”

The 1720 House

I didn't have a car, so I loved the convenient location--you're so close to the beach and to the shops. I was traveling alone, which can be a great adventure...or not. This was in the former category, thanks to Abby, the owner of 1720 House. She runs the place as if she's entertaining friends, She couldn't have been more fun or more helpful with suggestions about things to see and do. The place was adorable, and I'll be back.

My son booked rooms at the beautiful 1720 House for his wedding. The owner arranged everything from the caterer to the flowers. She met with my son and his finance in New York and helped design the invitations and announcements and found a Rabbi on the island to marry them. She wrote and submitted the announcement to The New York Times. The ceremony took place under the oldest and tallest Beech tree on the island. A day hour before the wedding our photographer cancelled. Abby convinced a friend of hers to shoot the event.. The photos were superb . Forget high priced wedding planners, the owner was better than any other my family has used. My son is a writer and so is she, which gave them a lot in common.

My partner and I researched many B&B’s in Martha's Vineyard on the Internet and decided to spend a weekend at The 1720 House, our first visit to the Vineyard. We were late leaving New York and when we finally arrived in Massachusetts (and nearly missed the last ferry to Martha's Vineyard), we called the owner to inform her that we had been severely delayed and requested that she please hold our room for us. She not only offered to accommodate our request, but even told us that she would be willing to pick us up from the ferry upon arrival! We were amazed by her graciousness (that level of accommodation is simply unheard of in New York City), and when we finally arrived at the Vineyard, where we were greeted by Abby, our charming and hospitable host for the weekend (who, we were delighted to discover, was also a New Yorker). In a few minutes, we were shuttled to the lovely 1720 House, exhausted and bleary eyed, and Abby gave us a quick tour of the charming property before we climbed into our luxurious antique four-poster bed and passed out. In the morning, we realized that we had stumbled upon a small slice of heaven: the inn was immaculately maintained; our room, large by comparison to other B&Bs at which we had stayed previously, was elegantly appointed and inviting; and the breakfast served was nothing short of a banquet, complete with fresh bagels and salmon, cakes, scones, toast, fresh juice and some of the best coffee we have ever tasted. Since this was our first trip to the Vineyard, we asked Abby to furnish us with suggestions for “must-see” places around Vineyard Haven. She provided us with a detailed itinerary and we spent an amazing day touring this picturesque town. It seemed that everyone we spoke with was well familiar with The 1720 House and charming Abby, and reiterated that we couldn't be better off than staying at The 1720 House. We agreed. Following another blissful evening at the B&B, we were resigned to pack and start the commute back home the next morning. Our experience was everything we could have hoped for and more, and we highly recommend a stay here, if only for a weekend. Abby should anticipate our return.

“A True Vineyard Inn”

The 1720 House

14 Feb 2007

I have been in the hospitality industry for over thirty years in one capacity or the other so I am very particular when I travel and/or vacation. I recently had the good fortune to be able to visit the island of Martha’s Vineyard. A business associate told me about The 1720 House in Vineyard Haven. I usually do not frequent inns and B&B’s since we find that a lot of the innkeepers can be overbearing and do not know when to give you enough space to relax.

The innkeeper at the 1720 House seemed to know when we needed assistance or that extra something that made our stay thoroughly enjoyable. The other feature(s) that made this inn stand out was the short walk to the shops and ferry but far enough away to give it a remote feeling. The grounds were very large with beautiful foliage and trees. This would be an ideal setting for a wedding (my girlfriend hinted). Cheers to the staff.

Michael
