The Mansion House in Vineyard Haven is steps from the pier but believe me, this is not a deterrent. It is easy to get to, parking behind the property if you bring your car ( which we recommend because it couldn't be easier and more affordable to bring it on the ferry). The desk staff very pleasant, Zephrus is the restaurant on the property and it was incredible. We brought our own wine and it was corked and poured! Scallops Ceviche, flaky calamari, bell peppers with Risotto and grilled shrimp, So Good and we couldn't be pickier. We didn't expect it to be so good. The rooms had this light and airy feeling, the bed was sooo comfortable, didn't want to get out of bed, gas fire place, balcony, wonderfully comfortable tub, separate shower, refrig, ROBES that I ended up buying because they were so nice! We had room 411 which is the only King room with water view and fire place. With AAA discount it was a steal for $152/night. Breakfast is incl. Incredible gym and spa, indoor pool, aerobics room, cyclining room, weight room, treadmill room....Cupola on top of property, hotel surrounded by quaint shops! Coffee in the rooms, we will definitely go back!

“A quaint hotel but expected much much better for $300+ per night”

It was a quant New England hotel but we expected much much better for $300+ per night (even if it was a suite). We encountered a myriad of problems including:

The wireless internet service didn't work; the hotel couldn't help; the support center was apparently closed for the weekend; and the hotel staff didn't really seem to care. This was a major problem as I am on call for work 7x24 and I had to resort to using dialup at a very slow speed.

The door to the bathroom did not line up correctly, so it did not lock.

There were no room darkening shades or drapes on the windows, so we were woken up early every morning by sunlight. There were drape liners; they just used the wrong kind.

The carpet in the room was cheap and poorly put down so that if you walked around barefoot you felt major unevenness.

My sister-in-law could do a better job than the tile work that was done in the bathroom.

This is a relatively new hotel (built less than 5 years ago after a major fire at the hotel that used to be there). As I said for $300+ per night it should be much better.

Finally the restaurant was disappointing. No one really pointed out to us that Vineyard Haven is a dry town and you need to BYOB. (Their reservation conformations really should warn about this.) The restaurant / hotel said we could BYOB when asked, but no one said there would be a corkage change nor did we notice it on the menu. Service was slow an inattentive. And finally it cost $88 for 2 people for mediocre food with no alcohol!

I booked this hotel 9 months before I went. They told me about making sure I got the "Woods Hole" ferry way before I got their which I really appreciated.

I gave them nearly a $1,000 deposit - booked the suite. Called the night before arriving - the room was not available for the day we planned to leave. I had to rearrange my plans with the ferry (waited 3 hours to leave) as well as staying an extra night in Boston.

The day of arrival find out the room was not booked that we asked for. That very night they sent back my $1,000 deposit to the card I no longer owned (it was a Western Union Card). They tried to get me to pay again. I refused and they accepted (they should of been able to get the money back from Western Union).

They gave us the first night free due to the mistake. When I finally got to the suite I was so stressed it was really hard to enjoy. Beautiful facility. But I would not take their word on it that they booked what you asked for. Check and check again - get it in writing if you can. Other than that - it was a nice place. Could never go back thanks to all the heartache.

“VERY DISAPPOINTED!”

We just got back from a vacation to the New England states to
celebrate our 40th anniversary. I felt like I had checked out the
hotels quite thoroughly with Trip Advisor, but I should have paid
more attention to the reviews that mentioned the terrible service!
Boy, are they correct! From checking into the hotel to any
problems you might have--they are unfriendly and completely
lacking in trying to help make your stay enjoyable!
We ordered a fruit and cheese tray that was to be ready upon
our arrival. It was not. Since we wanted to leave and sightsee
the rest of the day, we told them to be sure and put the tray
in the refrigerator in the room. Of course, when we get back hours later it is sitting out. I, very nicely, explained that I didn't
want the tray after it had been sitting out and to please come and
get it and to credit our bill. They came and again with the attitude!
Our bill was credited there, but when we got home and checked
our credit card bill the charge reappeared!
The carpet in the room was dirty; and dead bolt broken--as
someone else mentioned in another review. I didn't even bother
to tell them because I couldn't stand the unpleasantness that
would result from a phone call to the staff. There was mold in
the shower; and the sinks are both pedestal, which is very
unhandy when you're trying to get ready. The view, which I
was told was wonderful; isn't much! I booked a water view
suite, but you can see the water only from a distance as there
are blocks of city in-between. The restaurant attached had good
food and a very nice waitress, but the hostess taking names
looked like she would like to tear you to ribbons. It was
defnitely a bad attitude in that hotel and I would
never stay there again!

Management Response

Mother Nature is responsible for the water views, but we are responsible for the rest. Happily Mansion House Inn usually receives complements, good write ups and guests love the authenticity of the seaside village of Vineyard Haven. But this review from Midwest Happytraveler recounted a perfect storm of mistakes. After researching each detail with staff we called the reviewer, apologized again and credited her account again for her inconvenience. Our goal is affordable luxury in a magical place. We congratulate Midwest Happytraveler on her anniversary and hope that the rest of her trip created warm memories for the next 40 years!

“a great time”

my husband & i stayed in a jr suite this week in celebration of our 2nd anniversary and we had a wonderful stay.
the staff were very helpful (especially the 3 women), the location is convenient to everything (ferry, bus line, etc) and the breakfast was delicious.
the hotel rates drop dramatically following columbus day AND if you stay 4 nights, you only pay for 3. the hotel is very pretty and the island, charming.
we rented a tandem from martha's bike rentals and went all around the island's 40-plus miles of bike trails. the staff there were both very helpful and friendly.
but keep in mind that if you plan to sail or partake in some other activities, many establishments are closed after columbus day.
we didn't have any problems because there was plenty to do...
