We travelled the 19th October and were prepared for the isolated location having researched the area prior to booking. The airport is small to say the least, but we were not kept waiting too long to collect luggage and pay the Visa entry fee (£13 each and they do give change). We then set off for the hotels in convoy, normal practice for much of Egypt. We arrived at the Hotel along with 3 other bus loads to be met by experienced polite and helpful staff who checked us in quickly and efficiently. the restaurant was open on our arrival (11pm).
Our rooms were as requested, next to each other and ground floor. They were large and well maintained, the bathroom has a huge walk-in shower which was efficient and always hot. There was a good selection of toiletries replenished every day. The room was kept clean/tidy and different towel art was left for us every day.
Our first day was largely cloudy, but after that the weather was good with lovely warm sunshine and the odd passing cloud. We were sunbathing every day and enjoyed the pool area as well as going in the sea. The beach was beautiful but deserted most of the time, this was the end of the season and sunbeds were removed from the pool area and on the beach and piled up further along. However we did see Hotel staff fetch more if people wanted them. the hotel itself was only half open, the Infamous Italian guests had left and only half the rooms being used. This did'nt present any problems to us, and we did'nt find the one remaining buffet restaurant over crowded. It did get busy after 9am for breakfast, but we were up early and never encountered any issues. We found the food to be pretty good, this was our 5th visit to the country and it was on a par with most of the other hotels we have stayed. The public areas and gardens are very well maintained and very comfortable, cleanliness is excellent and none of our group were either ill or felt ill.
Our two teenage boys played tennis every day for an hour which was included in the AI package including the racquets/balls. The indoor pool area looked lovely, we didnt use it but had the weather been bad then i'm sure we would have. My husband/son visited El Alamein on a trip with Thomsons, they thoroughly enjoyed this trip and thought it was worth the money.
The journey back to the airport highlighted exactly how remote the area is (it was dark on our arrival). We felt that we saw the real Egypt for the first time despite having visiting the country before. Mersa Matruh airport check in is bizarre..............they do not have computers to check you in, instead you have to find your'e name on a list of people and tick yourself off. There is a small shop/kiosk that sells sweets/chocolate/crisps/drinks at inflated prices and not much else.
Overall, we had a good holiday and would return. I cant comment on the previous reports of the Italian guests at this hotel as they had gone. The Thompson entertainer does a good enough job, but remember entertainment is low key in Egypt wherever you stay.
