The drive along scenic highway 61 is worth it. I was in Duluth and decided to drive this route. So glad I did. Two Harbors lighthouse is beautiful and in my opinion better than Split Rock because 1) you can see it for free and 2) you can get up close pictures. Really a pretty lighthouse! Be sure to stop at Gooseberry Falls State park. Again entrance is free and it is only a 3-5 minute easy walk to see the falls along paved walkways. The falls are beautiful and a great place for a picnic! Split Rock Lighthouse is beautiful but expensive to visit. You pay $5 per vehicle to get into the park and then an additional $9/adult to see the lighthouse. Because the lighthouse is hidden in the trees, you can only see it from a distance without paying the additional fees to go in. However, there are two great places for nice pictures. 1) At pebble beach within the state park which is only the $5 entry fee and 2) At a pull off just before the park entrance. If you are driving N from Duluth/Two Harbors there is a road to the right just before the big brown sign for the park and lighthouse. The road is not marked but there is a fantastic pull off where you can get some fantastic photos for FREE! No need to pay the park fee and definitely not worth paying for the tour at the lighthouse. Kelly at the visitor center is extremely rude and not helpful; however, the folks at the entrance to the state park are extremely nice and VERY helpful. Also, the souvenirs at the State park entrance are half the cost than the visitor center for the lighthouse.
