This was my second stay at this hotel, for an annual conference. Last year, I had been given a room that overlooked the back of the hotel, and was awoken each night at 2am when the surrounding bars started dumping empty beer bottles into the dumpster (loud enough to wake me from a sound sleep, even on the 8th floor). This year, I asked in advance to be booked into a quieter room, facing the convention center.
The hotel staff is friendly and accommodating. The front office manager gave me a complimentary upgrade to a whirlpool suite on the 8th floor, in the wing facing the convention center, with views of the Mississippi. The room was spacious and comfortable, with king bed (Sleep Number), two flat screen televisions, sofa, work desk, minibar, and the aforementioned whirlpool (in the main living space, not the bath).
The hotel is extremely convenient if you are attending an event at the Riverside Convention Center, as it is connected via an enclosed bridge on the 2nd floor. There is a small exercise room, and a nice indoor pool.
Breakfast is not included in the room rate, and is an $8.50 add-on. A typical morning included cold cereal, oatmeal, a pan of pre-scrambled eggs with cheese, home fries, sausage chunks, and pastries. No toaster or waffle maker. Ala carte options are available at additional charge. While the breakfast is serve-yourself, coffee and juice are served at your table by an attendant.
The biggest problem with the hotel is still the noise. While I didn't get a lot of noise from the surrounding college bars on this side of the hotel, my sleep was disturbed many times each night by the frequent freight trains blasting their horns as they cross the nearby bridge over the Mississippi. I'm not a light sleeper...the trains are nearby, frequent, and LOUD.
The location can't be helped...if you have a hotel in the city center, there's always going to be noise, but the noise can be attenuated with proper soundproofing techniques (as seen in the better airport hotels). Unless the hotel makes an enormous expenditure in upgrading the bay windows in room to a more soundproof model, this is always going to be a noisy hotel.
After two sleepless stays, despite the comfortable room and great staff, I don't think I'll be inclined to utilize Le St Germain again on my next visit to St. Cloud.
