We stayed at Surfide in mid-May, which is the off season on the North Shore, and it was simply amazing. We wanted a waterfront location with luxurious accomodations and Surfside certainly delivered. The units are perched on a bluff overlooking Lake Superior which is 150 feet out your back door. The photos you see on their website are exactly what you'll experience. The views of the endless horizon are serene. The constant, gentle sound of the waves hitting rocks will make you think you're on the ocean.
The townhomes each sell for $1 million so this should give you an idea of how nice the interiors are. The three floors total 3,000 square feet so you will have more than enough room. Each unit has 4-5 decks and tons of natural light. The great room, overlooking Superior, has 25 feet of floor to ceiling windows. The furniture and decor is contemporary, relaxing, and luxurious. The kitchen is like yours at home - it has everything you'll need to cook and clean up. There is a dining room which seats 8 and a breafast bar in the kitchen with 4 stools. The three bedrooms are large and full of windows. The bedrooms on floors 1 & 3 have their own patio/deck which overlooks Superior. The bathrooms continue the relaxation & spa feel. They are very large and luxurious.
The spa & pool facilities were excellent. We didn't use the spa but heard good things about the treatments. The indoor heated pool, hot tub, and workout facility are all health club quality. The views are to die for. As you work out or sit in the hot tub, below you lies the endless views of Lake Superior. Very relaxing.
The staff at Surfside/Bluefin will be as engaged as you want them to be. You call for housekeeping. While this may seem odd, the reason behind this is that the staff want to leave you alone to relax. If you do call, they respond immediately. They are helpful with suggesting local restaurants, hikes, and daytrips. There are free daily organized activities for young children, free guided hikes, and free rentals of all sorts of hiking gear, bikes & toddler pull behinds, snow shoes, etc.
Tofte is a pass through town so there is not much to do. There is a gas station, a small grocery store, a liquor store, and two restaurants which are part of Bluefin Bay. The CoHo cafe was excellent and better than what you'd expect. We enjoyed their sandwiches and salads. Lutsen and Grand Marais are 10 and 30 mintues north respectively There is a ton of hiking within 10 minutes of Surfside and we really enjoyed the trails filled with waterfalls and canyons.
In short, Surfside is located in a sleepy town on the North Shore. The location overlooking Superior is simply breathtaking. The townhomes and facilities are very high end and will leave you very relaxed when you leave. We are already planning to return this fall. Enjoy!
Units 8 and above have the best views because they are unobstructed.
