We stayed at this property on March 22 - 25, 2012 on a family vacation. We have children aged 5 and 19 months, so a smallish water park seemed appropriate. We went to the water park for one day and saw Kansas City sights on the other days of our trip. The hotel is part of the Holiday Inn line and it is very close to Kaufman Field and Arrowhead Stadium, so if your family was coming in to town for a game and you wanted a water park option to add to your trip, this might be a good option. Proximity to these forums and the build in water park are the best things I can say about the hotel. The hotel itself is rather dated and spotty. I fear that the guests are coming to easily for the hotel, so they have not done a very good job of keeping up the property, which appears a bit run down. Out room was on the back side of the hotel, which is built on a hill. We were on the first floor, abutting the hill, so we had very marginal cell phone service (not the hotel's fault, but worth noting if you need service - a higher floor might, or might not, solve this problem). Our room itself was large enough, but the bathroom was very small. Two adults barely fit if they are getting ready for bed. When we checked in, we only had one wash cloth. The next day, when we were leaving, a maid asked if we had just checked in, because our room was not listed on her master list as being occupied - translation, they were not going to clean it. I asked her to add us to the list and then, to be sure, called the front desk and asked them to make sure house keeping had us listed. I had to call the front desk, rather than house keeping directly because the buttons on our phone linking you to this extensions did not work. The front desk advised that it would be addressed. We also asked for extra towels and wash clothes. By about 6:00 pm, our room was still not cleaned. I called again and again at around 8:00 p.m., but our room was never cleaned that day. The next morning, I called again before we headed out to see some sights. By the time we returned, the room was clean and extra towels were left, but still no wash clothes - of the days we were there, we had more than one wash cloth only on one occasion. Other problems with the room include: (1) a shower curtain rod that was about to fall off - they did fix this, sort of, but I expect based on how much it moved around, that it would not last much past our stay; (2) a lot of noise (not exactly their fault); and, (3) importantly, an air conditioner that did not ever work right. The thermostat always read that it was 65 in the room, but I doubt it ever got below 80. I suspect they may not have ever even turned it on in spite of our daily protestations. They may have been trying to save money, since it is late winter/early spring. Regardless, we were hot. They promised to fix it every day when we complained, but it was never fixed. Other complaints include a non-functioning ice maker on our floor. It never worked, although it also never had an out of service sign. I complained of this, but it was never fixed or marked with a sign. While this is a small issue, it is annoying. We were on the first floor. The ice maker on the second floor had been removed, although the signs still direct you to it on that floor (how difficult is it to take that down or add a sign saying to get your ice on 3?). We had to go to the third floor for ice. Again, not a big deal, but worth noting, as it tells you how poorly maintained the property really is. There are other complaints, but you get the picture. For what it is worth, the water park is fairly nice, although a bit small. Our five year old loved it and our nineteen month old got about as much out of it as you could hope for. The water could have been warmer, but it was not too bad. I do find it annoying that they charge for the lockers and there are not enough of them, but oh well. Also for what it is worth, this is not the best part of town. While I was filling up with gas at a nearby station, I noted a number of persons loitering and was panhandled on a couple of occasions. I would not leave anything of value in my cars - in fact, the hotel has a sign advising as much. The resort is located with good access to the highway, so you can get places relatively quickly, although none of the other sights, other than the sports facilities, are very close.
If you need data service for your phone, make sure to get high enough that the hill does not block y...
