“A bit pricey but hey, it's a tourist town...”

Comfort Inn Yellowstone North

I booked this on the fly after a spur of the moment trip to Yellowstone, it was a bit on the pricey side but for last minute and no planning ahead of time I was happy to not have to sleep in my truck. Location is right in town and only a few minutes drive from the North entrance to Yellowstone park. The hotel itself looks pretty rustic from the outside sort of like a cabin and the windows are badly in need of washing. Inside the lobby area / restaurant it's like a taxidermist's museum; there are dozens of mounted Elk, Moose, and Deer heads on the walls and 100's of antlers. If you are an animal lover and don't like hunters or what they do, you might want to avoid staying here. If you don't mind, it's actually kind of fun to look at.

Check in was fast and efficient, I was on my way to my room in no time. I booked a King suite as it was all that was left at the time I booked it for about $161 + Tax (AAA rate). Room was on the third floor and I was happy to find an elevator. The room itself had rustic (log style) furniture and was clean. I had a jacuzzi bath tub in addition to the regular tub/shower set which I didn't use. Room was very large with a separate sofa and desk area. Bed was soft and had nice linens but for some reason I never got comfortable on it and it may have been too soft for me. There was also a fridge and microwave.

The restaurant was open when I was there and I had dinner the night I arrived, I have to say this was the highlight of the hotel. Service was excellent, I don't remember the name of the gal who waited on me but she was delightful. I ordered the Rib-eye which was cooked to a perfect medium rare and very good. The menu is simple but it looked like they were trying hard to make this go. There also was a balcony/deck area upstairs which they were running like a small bar where you could go out on the deck and have a beer. I didn't go but it looked nice, the view from the deck is great.

“good location but dark and gloomy rooms”

Comfort Inn Yellowstone North

21 Jun 2008

The location is great -- just outside the North entrance to the park --
but that's about all it has going for it. The room was dark, gloomy, damp and smelled of stale cigarette smoke even though it was a non-smoking room. We had thought of staying longer and making this our "home base" from which to explore the park, but one night was more than enough. They advertise a restaurant but it was not open, breakfast was available in the morning but in a makeshift buffet setting -- poor quality and limited offering.

There was a great pizza restaurant next door. Not much else in town.

“Smells like cigarette smoke, rude service, no microwave”

Yellowstone National Park
26 Apr 2008

From April 21 - 25, I was attending a week-long training in the conference room of the hotel. The training included about 16 employees of Yellowstone National Park and other National Park Service units in the area. During our lunch break one day, I wanted to heat up my food, so I went to the dining area, but I didn't see a microwave. So, I went to the front desk, but no one was there. There was a sign saying to dial "0" if you needed assistance. So, I dialed 0, and a man answered. (Apparently, he was at his residence, and there was no staff available at the hotel.) I said I was here at the hotel for training and was wondering where a microwave was so I could heat up my lunch. The man said that there wasn't a microwave at the hotel. I was incredulous and asked "There's not a microwave for guests to use?" He said that there was no microwave. I asked if there was any microwave at all in the hotel - even one that employees used. He said that he didn't think there was, unless his wife put one in without his knowledge. So, I asked again whether there was a microwave in the hotel. He said no. He asked if I was a guest there, and I said I was attending a training session in the conference room. His tone and demeanor were very abrasive, rude, and unprofessional. He identified himself as Rod McAllister, the owner of the hotel. I asked who I would complain to for the lack of the microwave. He said I would complain to him, as he is the owner. I asked if there was anyone above him, perhaps a Board of Directors or some other entity. He said there was nothing above him and no one else to complain to. So, I asked him for his mailing address, which he gave me.

From my experience, microwaves are a standard and fairly basic item that hotels and motels have available for guests to use in the dining area. It seems so primitive and behind-the-times for a name-brand hotel chain like Comfort Inn to not have something as simple and basic a microwave. The lack of a microwave (which cost under $100) at the Comfort Inn in Gardiner was shocking and disappointing. The very rude encounter with the owner was even more shocking.

Another disappointing and unusual observation about the Comfort Inn in Gardiner was that the whole inside of the building smells like stale cigarette smoke. Perhaps smoking used to be allowed in the building. I did notice a "No smoking" sign on the front doors, but this may be a new addition. Once one enters the building, the smell of smoke is obvious and strong and annoying. I noticed that there is a separate room - like a bar/tavern - above the front desk/lobby area that says smoking is allowed in it, so perhaps smoke is leaking out of that room into the main building that is supposed to be smoke-free. The training session was held on the 3rd floor, and the smoke smell was still apparent there. One day, an attendee opened the windows of the conference room to let fresh air in. Unfortunately, one the hotels employees decide to take a smoke/cigarette break directly below those windows, and the wind carried the secondhand smoke into the conference room. Those of us in the training could smell the smoke, so someone got up and closed the windows.

Comfort Inn should prohibit smoking in the entire hotel and then deodorize the inside of the hotel so guests don't have to breathe stale secondhand smoke during their stay.

Until then, I will definitely NOT recommend the Comfort Inn for my family, friends, and other guests when they come to visit Yellowstone.

“Cool Rooms, Terrible "Pools"”

Delaware, OH

Due to this being peak season for yellowstone had trouble finding hotels and this was a last resort. The rooms were cool and the hotel was in an okay location. The "pools" they advertise are actually three whirlpools and one was not in working order. The other two looked filthy that we decided not to use. They did not have the complimentary continental breakfast available--you had to pay $4.95 for a very limited hot breakfast bar (runny eggs, potatoes and some stale pastries.

After staying two nights in Red Lodge, Mt. we decided to get closer to the Yellowstone Park. When we arrived not knowing what to expect, it did kind of surprise me. The hotel was very dark inside and the front desk people weren't very friendly. My account had already been charged the day I called for the room with no way for a refund. That was explained to me. The room
rate was definately not a $100+ night room. It was very small and cramped with very little room and also very dark. They did
not serve breakfast and the night meal was not great. I would not recommend this place. The morning breakfast room was
locked and they had no microwave for the guests. The internet
was available at the front desk.
