We were in Las Vegas in February and stayed at the Flamingo. That hotel probably has the closest approach to the monorail station of them all, although the Hilton is not bad.
This was our first trip to Vegas since the monorail was finished so we wanted to check it out. It is fast, efficient and clean. The trains come every 7 minutes or so and there are numerous stops along the route.
The monorail is a great value if you are staying on the EAST side of the Strip. It does nothing for those on the WEST side unless they are willing to walk quite a distance. That said, the monorail can be a great savings if your plans follow it's path.
For us it was great. Staying at the Flamingo the station was a short, easy walk. We wanted to go see the Star Trek experience at the Hilton and the monorail station is right outside that part of the Hilton so it was just perfect. Another day we went back to the Hilton to see Barry Manilow and the monorail met our needs perfectly again. It would be handy for going to the south end of the Strip as well if you didn't want to take a cab or wait for the bus.
A one ride ticket is $5, which I agree is steep if you're not going the whole route but 10 rides for $35 works out to $3.50 per ride, which is infinitely cheaper than any cab ride from the Flamingo to the Hilton for two people.
I can see how it would be most beneficial for people attending conventions and I am sure that fact figured heavily in the planning and placement. I have heard that the line will eventually be extended from the airport to downtown. When that happens it will be a real blessing for visitors.
Ride it for the novelty. Ride it if it fits into your plans. It is certainly not the answer to Vegas' transportation headaches but it is a small help for some people.
