We have stayed all over Las Vegas on previous trips and were somewhat leary of reserving rooms at the Sahara. But we got a package including the Sahara which was hard to turn down. The package included a 'luxury room' which at the Sahara means the newer Tangiers Tower. We were also dying to try the new monorail to go to other areas of the strip; the new monorail system stations start at the Sahara - so we bought the package.

Our first morning there included a ride on the monorail down to the MGM Grand. It was fun, convenient and cheap.

But when we wanted to go back to the Sahara in the late afternoon - Uh, Oh - closed, broken down and out of service (the monorail).

We were there for a week and the monorail never moved again during our entire visit. We were forced to use cabs and the terribly run city bus service for the rest of our trip.

The city of Las Vegas has now spent millions of dollars on a monorail service that is fraught with problems. Don't count on it like we did!

But to get back to the Sahara. It is far and above the other 'reasonably priced' hotels in Las Vegas. We had good views, clean rooms and cheerful room attendants (maids). We ate at their Caravan Cafe for a pittance - the Cafe is open 24 hours a day and staffed by very nice people. The food was very good.

We used the pool a few times. The whole outside area is nicely kept and inviting. And the water was clean and sparkly. Their pool has no 'deep' end - it is about four feet deep from one end to the other. And there is a poolside bar - the ambience was a bit hokey, but it's nice to be able to buy a beer without going inside dripping wet. There were no children anywhere, which was also nice.

The only odd occurence there was that there were two days out of the week that the maid didn't make my bed. We'd get back to our room around dinner time each night to find the room made up except for those two days that they didn't touch my somewhat messy bed. My husband's bed would be perfectly pulled together and mine would be just as I had crawled out of it! Go figure......

Would I stay at the Sahara again? Certainly, if I could count on the monorail. But without the monorail running, it's to far away from the rest of the strip.

I am going to meet friends and loved ones for in Vegas on my R&R. My friend(s) after searching the hotel finders found the Sahara was the "cheapest". We all made my reservations seperately (receptionist I talked with was polite and accepted my price challenge for a less inexpensive rate) for a "deluxe" room. Alas afterwards I found this website and read the unfavorable reviews, thinking to myself (self) look at some other web sites and see what others say. Low and behold, about the same, NOT GOOD. After conversing with my friends, I convinced them to change hotels and allow me to pay for the upgrades (which they were all in favor for). Now, here is my "unfavorable" comment, when I looked up the website to cancel my reservations, I noticed that STANDARD not DELUXE was the room type. Now, was someone at the Sahara trying to pull a fast one on me? I stay a several hotels and when I check online for my reservation(s) it clearly states the exact room I requested. Could this be unethical business practices with the Sahara in trying to sucker me into a standard room and not a deluxe?

I stayed at Caesars Palace, but due to the fact that the Sahara kept me winning, I spent a lot of time here. I had a blast! Ok, yes the location is bad but with mass transit it's a non issue. The place doesn't look like it has had a make over since it opened in the 50's, but unlike some of the other old casinos, still looks fairly elegant so one is able to get that feel of being transported to Vegas' early days.

The roller coaster was a lot of fun, and if thrill rides are your thing, this is a good local, across the street is the Stratosphere.

The food in the buffet and Paco's was average, but cheap for the strip.

Customer servicewise, I found most to be very friendly and happy. I can't believe that the other people who wrote the reviews stating that the service was terrible were telling the truth. The only thing I can think of, I work in the casino industry myself, and many times when someone loses more money than they can afford, they begin to bash everyone and anything rather than admit to themselves that they have a problem.

Give the Sahara a try, sure it's not the posh elegance of some of the newer places, I recomend, no matter your budget to try them also at least for one night of your stay if nothing else just to try the really great restaurants they have, but the Sahara will keep you in budget and still feeling good. You owe it to yourself to check it out.

“Good deal”

I stayed here two nights this summer with my family. I booked the room through the Internet for a great low rate of some $36. What you need to be clear of are the surcharges, however. In addition to taxes, I also had to pay a $3 energy surcharge and the $1 local phone charge is also billed whether you use the phone or not. Added all this up I paid $40 for a deluxe room, overlooking the stip, and it was well worth the money.

The rooms are not new, and one of our rooms had a pretty funny smell (probably some cleaning fluid they had to use because someone messed up the room before us). Otherwise it was great, and we could enjoy the view of the Strip.

The hotel is at the north end of the Strip, so if you want to see it all, prepare for a walk (I actually enjoyed that part). You can also take the new train which starts at Sahara and ends at the other end of the Strip. It's a fun ride.

Alltogether, the Sahara was a good value for the price. The buffet is also a good value (especially if you take your time to find a $1 off coupon that is in most of the flyers...), and the casino is fun too, with some good low-bet tables.

My husband and I will probably not return to the Sahara ever again..unless its super cheap rate. We stayed from Aug. 27th to 29th, the resort looks good from the outside..the facade. We checked in at the kiosk. We had a room in the Tunis tower, which is the old tower. The elevator to get to the Tunis tower was so old and dirty. The hallways in the tunis tower were so dreary. We entered our room, which was in the 2nd floor. Small room, but looked clean and ok. Checked out the bathroom, small and unappealing. I was so grossed out when I saw black thick gunk in the sink. An the ceiling was damaged. This was unacceptable. Tried calling the front lobby, but no answer! Went downstairs and insisted on talking to the hotel manager. The check in clerk said their wasnt a need and would move us to a a new room. She was great! She hooked us up with a Deluxe room in the Tangiers tower(new tower) on the 7th floor. We had a view of Las Vegas Blvd. and the Stratosphere/Downtown Las Vegas/Freemont. Beautiful to gaze at during the evening. The room was bigger and alot nicer. Compared to the Luxor,GN,Monte Carlo,Bally's and Orleans it was more like a standard room instead of a deluxe. The TV was a tiny 19 inch and the wndows were dirty. The slots were tight but Blackjack tables were excellent and fun, $3.00 and $5.00 tables! The Sahara needs more atmosphere..its so boring! The lounges suck and bars do too! The buffet is the worst in Vegas...had better in Downtown at the Fitzgeralds for $5.99..even the sucky buffet at the Stardust is better! Room service is slow and the food is only O.K. The breakfast buffet was gross..bacon tasted and looked funny...waffles were hard and tasted like cardboard. Regreted going their..could of had better at Mc Donalds. something very true..is the bathrooms...bathtubs have slow drains. I took a shower and I had water up to my ankles!
Besides the boring atmosphere, yukky buffet, bad room service food....it was OK..you get what you pay for. The Sahara staff..check in clerks, housekeeping and valet are very nice..great staff in general. Next time will stay in the Center strip..where all the action is!
