By the standards of the latest Las Vegas hotel, the Mirage might be dated and in need of work, but try looking at it differently. Try looking at it from the point of view of people who are not used to the glitziest place in town. Against that standard, the Mirage comes up pretty big.
This is a big place, for starters, with thousandsof rooms atop the obligatory casino. The lobby is a wonder, with giant aquaria along one wall and all sorts of fish to watch. We were among those wh stood mesmerized by the fish, as traffic tried to get by. One negative to the Mirage is the fact that you have to troop through that casino (and all its smokers) to get to the elevators to your room. Great elevators, by the way.Lots of them, and never a long wait. Rooms are clean and well-appointed. They are luxury accommodations, at least by my standards, with a really comfortable bed.
I'm told they have a wonderful pool. If you go for that experience, you need to know the pool is closed for maintenance in December. I would question how many people want to use the pool then, anyway. We love to go in a ncie pool, but with daytime temperatures hovering in the 50s, it's have to be pretty hot water to make it an enjoyable experience.
Perhaps we think it was a value because we were staying here as part of a convention and paid around $150 a night. At that price, I'd call it value. If you're paying a lot more, there probably are other places where the rooms are slicker and you get a flat-screen TV. So it's like everything else whern you're watching pennies. Shop around and compare values.
