I greatly enjoyed my stay at The Golden Nugget in Laughlin. This was my second trip to Laughlin, and I enjoyed my stay much more than I had at the cheap and generic River Palms casino.
First off the GN has a covered parking structure that is easy to get in and out of, it is easy to find a decent parking spot close to the elevator, and the elevator takes you directly from the parking garage to the inside of the casino. From there it is a very short walk to the registration desk, and from the registration desk it is a very short walk to the room elevator. Fast, easy, convenient, you know, the way it should be.
The Golden Nugget is a relatively small hotel/casino, which I think improves the quality of customer service. Checking in took about 5 minutes on a busy Friday afternoon. Check out took about 3 minutes on Sunday morning.
The room quality was excellent. Our room and bathroom were very clean. Our non-smoking room did not smell like smoke at all. The king sized bed was quite comfortable. Rooms include coffee makers with free coffee, and hair dryers in the bathroom. There is also a fully stocked Honor Basket, similar to a mini bar in each room.
The basket had two large bottles of water, two muffins, Famous Amos and Mini-Oreo cookies, a small bag of beef jerky, cheese & crackers, assorted nuts, orange juice, snack mix, and Golden Nugget slippers. The prices were not outrageous for any of these items, probably the same you would pay in the gift shop.
We had a tower room facing the parking garage. We didn't not notice any noise from adjoining rooms. I did notice occasional noise from the parking garage, but it was not a big issue. The television has about 25 basic cable channels, and the usual pay per view options. Video check out was not available. Rooms are tastefully done with three framed pictures decorating the walls.
The bathroom has a long marble countertop and nice stainless steal fixtures. No problems with the toilet. Shower pressure was adequate, not great. Shower/tub combo with a shower curtain, standard motel type shower. Apparently our bath drained slowly when the stopper was pulled up (when it's not supposed to), and also drained slowly when the stopper was pushed down as well.
The casino itself is great looking and was quite busy during our stay. The tropical themed entrance atrium area reminded me of The Mirage in Las Vegas, with real Palm Trees and a small waterfall. The gaming tables though few looked very new and clean, with blackjack table limits as low as $5.
Most of the eateries in the GN were brand new. Harlows is a great looking cafe, Tarzans is a sports bar that doubles as a nightclub (the place was rocking on both Friday and Saturday nights after 10pm for the young/attractive crowd), Salt Grass (steakhouse) and Joe's Crab Shack are fairly new as well. Joe's Crab Shack has limited seating on the river side of the River Walk area.
While at the GN we only ate at The Deli, not to say that the restaurants didn't look great from the outside but I cannot vouch for the food or service. I can say that the sandwiches from The Deli were large and delicious and reasonably priced. The place is quite popular so be prepared to stand in line.
The Golden Nugget has a fairly good location in Laughlin. It is a short walk to the River Walk area, from which you can easily access the Pioneer, for cheap drinks in a souvenir boot in the bar overlooking the river, or the Colorado Belle, which has a good variety of reasonably priced restaurants. There is also a river taxi right outside the door that can take you to Harrah's or Don Laughlin's Riverside at the extreme ends of town, I believe the rate is $4 one way per person.
I personally love the Boiler Room at Colorado Belle, which has a 16oz T-Bone Steak, 16oz microbrew beer, plus choice of potato and a dinner salad all for $11.99. Other dining recommendations are the $9.99 Saturday/Sunday Champagne Brunch buffet at the Ramada Express, good variety of well prepared food to go with the cheap champage or wine. The Ramada Express coffee shop also does a very good breakfast (would have eaten at Harlow's Sunday morning but they were doing a Sunday Brunch which was $20+ per person).
Most people believe that the Golden Nugget and Harrah's are the best hotel/casinos in Laughlin, and while I've never stayed at Harrah's I've played there and seen a concert there. I can't vouch for the room quality at Harrah's, but I know that at GN they have about 300 rooms total, while at Harrah's they have three gigantic towers. Also the Harrah's location is very far away from the other casinos. I personally prefer the smaller more intimate setting. I also believe GN is on average more reasonably priced than Harrah's.
If you are planning a trip to Laughlin I cannot recommend the Golden Nugget highly enough.
