My wife and I took a one-hour ride with Corey as our guide and had a fantastic afternoon!
Based only on the reviews here on TripAdvisor, we were going to ride at Camp Richardson, but when we called them, their only one-hour ride was too close to the end of my daily conference meetings for us to make it work. Instead, we went to Zephyr Cove, which offered the rides departing every half hour.
I am very happy that we ended up there! Our guide Corey spent the full hour chatting with us, talking about the scenery, the horses, the Nevada economy, everything! He is a local kid who told us he grew up on a ranch in nearby Dayton. At the end of the ride, Corey and his girlfriend, Bailey, spent another twenty minutes talking to us about every one of the horses. Those two know every one of the horses: all of their tendencies, all of their likes, and all of their personalities. It was obvious that those two are devoted to the care of those horses. They even have a couple of horses that they got from rescue that they are working on restoring their health.
The ride itself follows a path up the mountain and ends up on a peak with a good view of the lake through the trees. Corey took pictures of us with our camera; there's no "official" photographer applying high pressure tactics to sell you overpriced photos from your ride like you encounter at so many of these types of attractions. The trail is a loop, so you don't have to come back down the same trail you went up. We were there in the low season, so our group consisted only of my wife and me (and our guide).
If there is anything I would recommend to improve this attraction is that attentiveness of the front-office guy is pretty non-chalant. He just takes the money and directs you to go wait by the fence outside. Also, the restroom is filthy! If I were female, I would not have sat down on that toilet. Take care of such needs before you get here.
Zephyr Cove is four miles east of the state line on US 50. The stables are on the opposite side of the road from where the Zephyr Cove Resort is located.
