Stayed at the Bretton Arms in February 2003. There had just been a heavy snowfall, and the scene was postcard-perfect--pristine snow crunching underfoot, utter quiet during most of the day, blue skies with just a wreath of clouds over Mount Washington. The location can't be beat, both for scenery and easy access to nearby Bretton Woods ski resort. The inn itself is an old building that has been renovated in a limited way. (For example, bathrooms are still small and basic, and doors are regular wood that does not block noise from the hallway. Curtains and bedspreads are floral chintz and could use updating.) The real charm of this place comes from the setting, the sitting room with its crackling fireplace, the wooden porch where you can leave skis, and the beautiful lines of the old buildings (including the nearby stable--walk in to visit the horses kept on hand for sleigh rides). You also get to enjoy the amenities of the Mount Washington Hotel up the hill, including a heated outdoor swimming pool (amazing in winter), small skating rink, gift store and dining room. All in all, I would recommend Bretton Arms for folks looking for a country getaway to an old-style New Hampshire inn. Just be aware the rooms themselves are not the pinnacle of the experience.
