“Good choice for White Mountains”

Part of the Mount Washington resort, this is a good choice if you want to stay in the very touristy White Mountains. It's more personal than the famous Mount Washington Hotel but you can still use all the facilities of the bigger sister (and going to the Mount Washington for a poncy diner is an entertaining way to revive memories of your Nile Cruise). The rooms are decent, the service friendly, the breakfast edible ... but it is not charming.

This is a lovely property, offering a much better and less expensive alternative to staying next door at the Mount Washington Hotel. Our room (#47) was pleasant if small, but be warned that the air conditioning (one small window unit) is inadequate on a hot summer day. I suspect this may be true of other rooms as well. The inn's dining is highly reviewed, but the dining room was closed on the Tuesday night we were there. The full breakfast (included in the price) was excellent. We ate dinner in the main dining room of the Mt. Washington Hotel and found the service and ambience to be excellent but the food to be average at best. For those who need to stay connected, the free internet connection offered is clunky and you have to pay for Wifi access.

This hotel is in the grounds of the main resort and is fab. All the staff were amazing and helpful, and dining is outstanding (menu better than the main hotel).

The room was superb - plenty of room, clean and well furnished, and there are only 30 so its very intimate. You get full use of main resort facilities too, we'd definetely stay here again. Setting is beautiful.

“Quaint and comfortable”

Bretton Arms Inn

Stayed at the Bretton Arms in February 2003. There had just been a heavy snowfall, and the scene was postcard-perfect--pristine snow crunching underfoot, utter quiet during most of the day, blue skies with just a wreath of clouds over Mount Washington. The location can't be beat, both for scenery and easy access to nearby Bretton Woods ski resort. The inn itself is an old building that has been renovated in a limited way. (For example, bathrooms are still small and basic, and doors are regular wood that does not block noise from the hallway. Curtains and bedspreads are floral chintz and could use updating.) The real charm of this place comes from the setting, the sitting room with its crackling fireplace, the wooden porch where you can leave skis, and the beautiful lines of the old buildings (including the nearby stable--walk in to visit the horses kept on hand for sleigh rides). You also get to enjoy the amenities of the Mount Washington Hotel up the hill, including a heated outdoor swimming pool (amazing in winter), small skating rink, gift store and dining room. All in all, I would recommend Bretton Arms for folks looking for a country getaway to an old-style New Hampshire inn. Just be aware the rooms themselves are not the pinnacle of the experience.
