My family has frequently stayed at Holiday Inn Express properties in recent years (as well as similar lodging in the Hilton, Marriott, and Carlson chains) because they work well for our needs--two adults, two teenagers--and because they tend to be relatively consistent.
That being said, I felt like this particular Express location was superior to the norm in several ways. The lobby with a fireplace and lots of wood had a more upscale, or maybe just a more location-specific, feel; the breakfast offerings were a bit more diverse overall (although I was disappointed that there was no fresh fruit the morning we were there); and the room my wife and I had felt a bit larger than normal (king-sized bed).
We were just passing through, but the location is not far from the U of New Hampshire campus.

This was the first time I've stayed at any Holiday Inn Express. I was coming to the Durham area for the Kittery Paddle Show. The front desk was very helpful with directions. At check out the girl working front desk was very helpful with billing issues.

I have found this hotel to be excellent. The staff is extremely friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the area. If they didn't know the answer to a question I had, they were more than willing to find the answer for me.
I was pleased with the rooms. As I understand they just finished some renovations and everything was brand new. They had nice flat screen TV's mounted on the wall as well.
This location is ideal for anyone traveling to the Durham area. They are extremely close to the University as well as Portsmouth and Dover.

This Holiday Inn Express in Durham-UNH really stands up for lack of room cleanliness. Upon checking in, I noticed the carpet around the bed had not been vacumed in a long time: there were all sorts of crumbs, bits of food, pieces of dental floss laying around on that space, just underneath the sides of the bed. A gross sight, to say the least. I've asked for a new room and found the very same problem. I then asked the front desk to have that 2nd room cleaned, or to bring me a vacum cleaner so I could do it myself. After awaiting in vain, I had to go out and came back a few hours later, hoping it had been taken care of by that time: to my amusement, nothing was done. Completely unaceptable considering their house cleaning staff was still around. So, I've moved into a 3rd room - only to find the same problem again!. At that point, I was back at the front desk, insisting on speaking with the property manager, but they said he was out of town. After a bad night of sleap, wondering if there wouldn't be roaches or rodents in the room, I've cut my stay short and checked out that morning. Finding a new hotel in the middle of a business trip, with heavy suitecaes loaded sith samples was a big inconvenience, but better than staying a such a filthy place. I was supposed to be at the Holiday Inn Express in Durham-UNH for 3 mights, but one night was more than enough for me. I'm upset the hotel never cared about the problem (they never contacted me later with an apology or explanation), which makes me believe the situation there must be the same, or probably getting worse with every new stay. I've complainned to a Holiday Inn hotline, they said the hotels were independently operated and offered me a few extra points on their frequent guest program - an insult after all that trouble. I will never stay at this hotel again. If you must stay at the Holiday Inn Durham-UNH, remember to look under your bed before you settle into the room. I've been traveling the world the past 25 years, and few hotel experiences were as bad as this one.
