“The gold standard for B&Bs. We love the Cabernet!”
I've been remiss; we've stayed four times now at the Cabernet (and the stay we just got back from has been the longest - we spent the entire first week of June there) and I'm only now getting around to putting up a review - and they deserve every positive word that can be said about them! There isn't enough time or space to write about how wonderful the Cabernet is. It was our first B&B experience, and it's set the gold standard for any other we'll ever encounter.
Every time we've been to the Cabernet, we've been greeted and treated warmly and thoughtfully. Their level of service is impeccable - Bruce and Jess are exceptionally helpful, without hovering or being overbearing about it. Ask for recommendations on pretty much everything - from shops to food to hikes to where to ski or kayak; they've been on the money every time for us. Actually, just ask, whatever the question; they will find out for you, and be honest about it!
We've been in a different type of room each stay, and have experienced all four types - premium, jacuzzi, fireplace and standard. Every one is comfortable, and all the rooms are decorated tastefully and with whimsical touches (the 'stuffed guardians' of each room are adorable and have inspired stories); the beds are cozy (my fiancé has commented that if we weren't in danger of missing breakfast, he'd probably stay curled up in bed a lot longer), and everything is immaculate. Try the premium rooms if one's available - they are enormous, and beautiful, and the in-room jacuzzi is a romantic treat.
The breakfasts and snacks are an entire five-star review by themselves. This past week, I think I only ended up looking at the breakfast menu once, because the daily specials all sounded (and were!) so fantastic - Jess is a master chef; her passion is cooking, and it shows. The portions are enormous - I can skip lunch easily afterwards; if you're worried about them being too much, though, again, just ask - they're more than willing to do half orders. Also, if you have any food allergies or issues, let them know ahead of time; they'll accommodate! On the breakfast menu, the french toast and blueberry pancakes are to die for. And do not miss out on the maple walnut french toast if it comes up as the special. You'll kick yourself, seriously.
The common areas of the Inn are comfortable and inviting. The downstairs common room is an especially perfect place to rest after a long day, whether you're playing some of the provided games, watching a movie on the TV, getting to know your fellow guests, or curling up with a book by the fireplace.
We won't ever consider staying anywhere else in Mount Washington Valley. This is the definitive place for couples to go to rest, relax, and retreat from the chaos of life. We always come back refreshed, and look forward to our next stay.
