We vacation every fall in the North Conway area, so we've stayed at about a dozen lodgings of all types, some more than once. Over the last few years, though, we've tended to gravitate toward the North Conway Grand Hotel. For our needs, it seems to be just about the perfect place.
If you're looking for the sort of personalized attention you'd get at a small bed and breakfast, then the Grand is not for you. It is, after all, a fairly large hotel, although we've found the staff to be professional and helpful when asked. If you know your way around the area, though, and just want to go about your business, you'll find it a comfortable place to be.
We always get a room with a jacuzzi in it, either a regular jacuzzi room or one of the jacuzzi suites. They offer a junior jacuzzi suite which is nice if you'd like a little more space and a couch, but don't need a larger, two-room suite. Usually when we're there it is during the baseball playoffs, and watching the Red Sox from the in-room jacuzzi minimizes the stress level of the games. The hotel offers free use of its DVD collection, but it's not very extensive, and most of the movies are pretty old.
We don't use the hotel's restaurant much, since there are a lot of good places to eat in the area, and we have our favorites. The breakfast buffet deserves to be mentioned, though. The spread is exceptional, including just about anything you could want for breakfast. Waffles, eggs, toast, sausage, muffins, bagels, cereal and more are all on the menu. The only disadvantage is that there is no a la carte option; the only choice is one price for whatever you want at the buffet. If you're a coffee-and-muffin-only person, you'll be greatly overpaying for your meal.
We always do some outlet shopping when we're in North Conway, and one of the best features of the Grand is that is just happens to back up to one of the biggest outlet sites in the area. Go out the back door of the Grand, and your in the midst of the stores; no need to get back in your car.
We're usually too busy to use the indoor or outdoor pools, but plenty of other reviewers have covered those. I can say that the pools look clean and comfortable, and that the view of the mountains from the outdoor pool area is spectacular.
I should point out that we always visit North Conway in the off season, never in the summer or winter, and always either before or after peak foliage time. So I can't give you an idea of what the hotel would be like during crowded times, especially if a lot of children are around, although the busloads of senior citizens who are usually there when we are do not present a problem.
But for our needs, at the season we visit North Conway, the Grand is just about the perfect place for us to stay.
