We just returned from our first visit to the Sugar Hill Inn. It won't be our last. Owner, Steve Allen, is seamlessly blending deluxe amenities into a traditional country inn.
Sugar Hill is located just off Rte. 93, but the picturesque village of Sugar Hill is about as far removed from the typical tourist destination as you can imagine. We arrived on a hot summer afternoon. Asst. Innkeeper, Theresa Spear, greeted us and gave us a brief tour. Almost every one of the public areas is newly renovated. We especially liked the small "tavern" room where Deb had decided that afternoon tea, on this particular day, would consist of her personal version of sangria.
There are several cottages out back, one of which is being converted into a luxury suite. We stayed in a room in the main building, named after Sugar Hill's most famous resident, Betty Davis. The front window faced the Presidential mountains. Out back, across the lawn, was a swimming pool, construction of which had been completed only days before. The Inn is now air conditioned. We noted that if we return during ski season, our room had a gas stove.
There is plenty to do within a short drive of the Inn. Nearby Littleton has a number of interesting shops. For those whose tastes run toward more active pursuits, Franconia Notch has swimming, boating and hiking trails.
Dinner at the Inn is a memorable experience. It is a four course, prix fixe event. Chef Val Fortin has created a menu of innovative and wonderfully prepared selections. Some of the most interesting choices involved variations on a theme. For our first course we chose a sampler of three different soups served in demitasse cups. One of the options for dessert involved small servings of a number of items, each with a ginger flavor.
For all of the upgrades, the Inn is not particularly formal. The atmosphere, both in the dining room and in the main areas is quite relaxed. The staff is warm and friendly. After dinner, there was a thunderstorm over the mountains. The guests gravitated to the wicker chairs on the front porch to watch the show. If this is your idea of entertainment, the Sugar Hill Inn is for you.
