Poverty Beach in Cape May might seem ironically named by a current visitor. It is located at the eastern end of the Cape May beach and is bordered by some of the most expensive homes in the town. Apparently it received its name many years ago when it was the beach of the serving class.
Today, Poverty Beach is a wide stretch of beach that is used by the residents of the area who are mostly rather well-to-do. Behind it and to the west are very nice homes. At the eastern end of the beach is the Beach Club of Cape May, once an exclusive "Cottagers" club, but now open for membership to the public. Farther to the east is the US Coast Guard Training Base, which is invisible from the beach, and the breakwater entrance to Cape May harbor.
Overall, it is a nice beach with a gradual slope and little sections of pebbles in which one can find "Cape May Diamonds". There are restrooms at the entrance. Perhaps it's main virtue is that it is away from the center of town and the summer crowds.
