Last summer (July and August 2008) my family and I rented a beach house called "Dolphin Watch" located in North Cape May (2 Cliiside Road) New-Jersey and we really enjoyed our stay, i.e., quiet place, peacefull and charming. As requested, we had sent to the owner (Mrs. Natalie Roy) a security and damage deposit which would be fully redeemed after our vacation (2 weeks after). As expected, a few weeks after we returned home, we received our deposit as promised but amputated of 150.00$ (US) over 250.00$. What a surprise! According to the owner (reasons written on a piece of scratch paper), 50.00$ was retained for not doing the cleaning as requested and 100.00$ retained for "entertainment". We then wrote to the owner trying to explain what really happened. We told the owner the house was left impeccable at the time of our departure. The only thing left to do was the vacuuming of the house. As a matter of fact, we were about to do it but all of a sudden, the cleaning lady showed up. She then told us to forget about doing the vacuuming since she was there to do it anyway. She really insisted for us not to do it. Strange, isn't it?
According the the lease document we had signed, we were restricted from doing "parties" on the premises. In fact, the owner of the house retained 100.00$ from our original deposit since she thought we held a party while we were there. We never held any party nor disturbed any neighbours around. In fact, we just had a few family members over for dinner (my 2 sisters and their children). and they never stayed overnight as directed by the lease rules. So is having a few guests for dinner considered a "party"? Even after explaining all that, the owner never returned the balance of our deposit nor given us any founded reasons for not giving us back our money. So travelers, beware before giving away your money for deposit to this owner since you are taking the risk for not getting it back.. In my own opinion, the is a well organized "gimmick". I would not be surprised they are doing that for quite a while!
