My husband had dreamed of someday building an earthship, and stumbled upon the rentals on Trip Advisor.

We were honored to have the extraordinary opportunity of staying for 2 nights in the Hut. We were very sad to leave Santa Fe after staying a week, but were immediately captivated by our sustained living experience.

The Hut is absolutely charming with it’s indoor tropical arboretum (yes, there were ripe bananas growing on one tree), and other details: well-stocked kitchen, comfy bed with attractive linens, shelves stocked with books, numerous potted plants and plenty of light. It was very well decorated, roomy, and very comfortable! I would describe it as a cross between camping and lodging-definitely an experience off the beaten path. I especially enjoyed bathing in the stone bath and watching the picturesque sunset outside.

It is easy to appreciate the peace and quiet, if you don’t mind the 10 minute drive into town. The Hut doesn’t have a phone, and we were unable to get cell service, but we didn’t mind this, being that we could simply towards town. I was a little sad to have a view of a dirt wall, but later learned that the earthship was built on a depressed piece of land to avoid the wind exposure.

I would recommend an earthship stay to anyone who enjoys the outdoors, and wants a truly unique experience. Bravo!

Staying in the Hut was one of the top 5 most amazing things I have done in my whole life!! This isn't for everyone -- you have to be into conservation and be willing to "rough it" just a little. The roads to the Hut are not paved, the odor in the bathroom was a bit pungent and there were some MONSTER bugs around the house.

However -- if you enjoy camping than you will definitely enjoy staying at the Hut!! The house was colorful and very comfortable -- a bit hot when closed up all day (the house heats and cools itself so it is to be expected). Once the vents were opened, the house cooled down and was wonderful! The bathroom was very unique with a stone-like shower, great water pressure and lots of hot water (surprising to me). The house is stocked with "how to build an Earthship" videos which are fun to watch once you are settled in for the night -- during the evening hours you will need to flip a switch to be able to turn on lights and the TV -- this uses the stored solar energy collected during daylight hours.

Although we did not cook any meals in the house, the kitchen is fully stocked -- there is a fridge and freezer and some items are stocked from previous renters.

Definitely stay in an Earthship during your lifetime!! This is the wave of the future.

Absolutely outstanding. Having a glass of wine, outside your earthship with the sun setting across the mountains of new mexico is something no-one should miss. The earthships are extremely comfortable and have lovely log stoves for a cold desert evening. I would thoroughly recommend this for anyone. If possible stay in the spectacular Nautilus!

Watch out for the huge spiders though (outside not inside!)
