This was my first trip to Stony Brook. We are empty nesters and were not traveling with children or pets. No problem, all of western New York brought theirs, so there was no shortage ;- ) The dammed up swimming area near the play ground was closed, so everyone was searching for there own little piece of the river to escape the 4th of July heat wave. I loved the beauty of the gorge trail and I even loved the fact that no one seems to mind if you actually get in the water. It's not easy to find places you can swim under a waterfall, so that alone makes it worth dealing with a crowd. The waterfalls are shaped perfectly and cascade beautifully. At first sight, I didn't think they were natural. However, BE SAFE, wear sturdy rubber soled shoes, the wet rocks can be really dangerous, but it seems the traffic keeps them cleaned off pretty well. I would very much like to return during off season if there is such a time.
