Nkwali Camp is lovely, clean and safe. The staff are attentive, relaxed, helpful and flexible. The food was healthy and delicious. The overall atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. It feels luxurious, but if you are looking for snobbishly elite don't come here - if you just want to enjoy Africa in a beautiful setting with nice people this is a great place. The rooms are wonderfully well constructed, clean, attractive, and very large. I was there in the "wet" season and saw the rare African wild dog, lions, leopard, kudu, and all the more common animals (huge variety of birds, elephant, giraffe, impala, zebra, waterbuck, puku, bush buck, cape buffalo, crocodile, baboon, etc.). Rain never distracted from game viewing and the rainbows and sunsets were beautiful.

We just spent a wonderful Emerald Season week with Robin Pope Safaris. Stayed 5 nights at Nkwali and 2 at Nsefu and enjoyed them both. Food was the best we have had at any safari camps in Africa (we have visited 23). Staff and guides were just awesome. Great wild dog sightings, lots of birds, incredible elephant and hippos. We were a little apprehensive about the Emerald Season but had only a few short showers during our stay that really did not interrupt anything. Did make for some incredible sunsets. Special kudos to Prince, Kiki, Daudi and Emma for all their care and attention during our stay.

The Sound of Hippos

We love Africa, and we go on safari often. The Robin Pope Camps are the only camps we have ever returned to, and this year, for a family visit - my husband and I, our son and his wife. It could not have been more perfect.

We were quartered in Robin's house, lovely for two couples, with two very large separate suites with glorious baths, and a joint living room/dining room / hanging out room with fully stocked refrigerator and bar. For us - best of all - we had privacy. We were well taken care of, had our own caterer /concierge, cooks and guides, all of whom were professional and delightful. Obi, what a gentleman and what a great guide.

We always love hearing the hippos as soon as we get into Nkwali. We love hearing their arguments and discussions as we go to bed and wake up. We love the trips to Kawazaa and the community feel of the Robin Pope camps, as well as the attention to every detail.

We loved Nkwali Camp! We were so fortunate to have the incomparable guide, Rocky, for our entire stay. His enthusiasm and sense of wonder were totally contagious. The highlights of our stay were (1) a local theater troup which performed for all of us at the special request of a family interested in theater. It was absolutely charming and delightful. And (2) our full day excursion into the park with Rocky, when we saw 22 lions, several leopards, and other wonders too numerous to mention. We hope to return, with our entire family, to Nkwali in several years.

Just got back from our Honeymoon. We spent the first five days in Nkwali and could not recommend the place highly enough. This was our first experience of safari. From talking to other guests, it seems that we struck gold immediately...

The situation on an arc of the Luangwa river is stunning. Woken by birds and hippos every morning. Porridge by the fire watching the sun rise over the river. Game drives or walks during the day. I'd recommend the walks - you get so much closer to the bush, take in all the sights and listen to the sounds. The guides were patient and fantastically knowledgeable. We saw an amazing range of animals. Only the leopards eluded us after five days....

The accommodation and food was great. Stylishly designed in a very sympathetic manner. The service was friendly and unfussy. Sundowners in some amazing locations in the park. Great dinners and fine wine. I genuinely felt that I was leaving friends at the end of our stay.

The whole thing was booked direct through Robin Pope in Zambia. Geno could not have been more helpful. Organising the wire transfer of funds was slightly tricky - I'd consider using an agent next time to make this side of things easier.

We'll be back (once we've saved the pennies).
