“great place”

Flame Tree Cottages

4 Feb 2008

We spent 6 nights at Flames and had a great time. The bugalow was bright and airy. The staff friendly and helpful. The food good.
And the owners, just wanted us to have a good time and went the extra mile to ensure we did. Flames offers a variety of activites and we opted for the sunset cruise with snorkelling on our last night - a perfect end.

As everyone agrees, this is a phenomenal resort. Having come from another, less reputable establishment on the island where we were cheated and abused, this was the savior of our vacation. The room was beautiful. We had the option of having meals on our gorgeous veranda or at the beachside restaurant, where the food was spectacular. The grounds are amazing, with fragrant flowers everywhere. The rate is a little more than we typically pay, but very worth it. On Zanzibar, it seems you get what you pay for.

We came as a large group and took over all the rooms at Flame Tree for a week. Seif and his staff couldn't have been more helpful and we had a ball. From the lovely gardens to the spectacular views out to the reef, this was a special find. If any of you know anything about cricket, Seif helped arrange a match at the local school and is always looking for any spare kit to help propogate the game up at Nungwi - do send or take anything. Seif's got one of the best chefs working for him who produced huge meals for us - speciality was Octopus Stew as well as crayfish, lobster, kingfish and prawns. He's got his own dhow for lovely sunset sails down the coast and nothing seems too much trouble to arrange, from spice tours to scuba diving expeditions. Go there - it's a gem.

Wow, where to start. Myself and my husband did the exhausting bus trip and then ferry to get to Flame Tree Cottages from Uganda. Once we arrived we knew we had made the right choice. It's my first time booking something over the internet without a personal recommendation so it was a bit of a risk. We sent our telegraphic transfer with the payment (100%) and my husband was freaking out that we'd never see the money again and arrive at a complete dive. The opposite is the case. we were welcomed by well spoken staff with a glass of juice. yummy.

Charming rooms with lovely storage, massive bed and flowers and warm shower. They gave us a complimentary bottle of champagne and even though we didn't take the honeymoon suite we were extremely happy with our choice of rooms- Flame cottage itself. Breakfast was served outside our room. Only complaint was so days the fruit (which had been frozen wasn't so fresh) but bread, eggs etc were great. Potatoes for dinner and good fish. There was no TV or internet at the time we were there but I didn't feel the need for it when the place is right on the beach and there is so much to do in Nguwi.

We were there from June 2nd to 7th and the only problem was the rainy season wasn't finished. It didnt stop us from having the most amazing honeymoon. The location is fantastically tropical but I like my comfort rather than slumming so Flame Tree Cottages didn't let us down.

The transfer to the ferry from the place was very comfortable though you should leave ample time because the driver cruises at the legal speed limit. No pedal to the metal etc.

This was my fourth trip to Zanzibar and we loved almost everything about our holiday.
The cottages are basic, but are clean, comfortable and kept beautifully cool.
Flame Tree Cottages are in the most beautiful setting, with dinner served each night on the beach and the village of Nungwi within easy walking distance. Trips can be organised to visit the local school, dhow building industry or just to see real life in an African village.
Breakfast is served each morning on your own private verandha and absolutely nothing is too much trouble for the owners, Elizabeth and Seif and their wonderful staff.
The food was superb and very reasonably priced, as were the trips to go snorkelling and to see the stunning sunset.
The holiday was slightly marred by the delay of our luggage for two and a half days, a common occurance, and for that reason we would suggest packing a change of clothes in your hand luggage, or not flying with Kenya Airways! Elizabeth and Seif were so helpful, providing necessary toiletries, chasing the missing luggage by phone and then personally going to sort out the compensation for the missing luggage.
We had such a wonderful time and will definately return for longer next year
