“The best location in Santorini”

Oia Mare Villas

19 Jul 2007
5/5 found this review helpful

I was travelling with my adult daughter and had these requirements: 2 separate beds, A/C, swimming pool and priced around $300. After extensive research, I came up with a few choices, but in the end like in all real estate, location, location, location was the deciding factor.
I strongly urge anyone going to Santorini to choose the town of Oia-pronounced EEAA -over Fira, the main town. It is where every photo of Greecian Islands is taken and where all in the know come to see the famous sunsets. In the case of the Oia Mare hotel, it is THE spot for sunset and views of the caldera. No other hotel has both views in this price catagory.
We had a 2 bedroom traditional house villa which means they have carved out a cave, smoothed it over and painted it white. They are actually little apartments completely equipped with full kitchens. Daylight comes from the front door and windows with sweeping magnificent views. The suite was very large-#101- and could easily sleep 5 if necessary.
Words of caution: There are many stairs leading to the hotel so this is not for those who have difficulty walking.
There is no restaurant but breakfast is served each morning. There is no bar, but if you request a bottle of wine, you can get it. Since you have a kitchen, it is cheaper and easier to purchase some at a wine vendor in the town.
I would strongly suggest that you arrange for a taxi to pick you up at the ferry or airport and have it written in that they will assist you with your luggage in both directions and will provide a voucher stating this. It would be utterly impossible to handle luggage on your own.
Enjoy your stay.

“A hotel in decline”

Oia Mare Villas

When you arrive in Oia, you stop first in the management office where, before even seeing the hotel, let alone your room, they make you pay in full and sign a form stating that you agree there are no refunds. Beware, there's a reason for this.

Here are some facts;

VIew - it is a partial caldera view, not full, as the view is 70% blocked by a mountain ridge.

Toiletries - there are none, unless you count the Days Inn style liquid soap dispenser mounted to the wall.

Linens - the towels are cheap beyond description, like sandpaper, and reaked of cigarette smoke. The sheets aren't much better.

Cleanliness - we had to clean the toilet ourselves when we arrived, along with a spiderweb in the bedroom. Tiles are missing from the shower. A general state of neglect and disrepair permeates, but not in a good sense of charming antiquity; more like indifference.

Air Conditioning - weak at best, our room never got below 75F.

Refridgerator - worked fine, but has no water or other items in it for guests. Hit the store before you go.

Wake Up Call - promised at 5:15am to help us make our 7:00am flight. Good thing we travel with an alarm clock, as we were never called.

Internet Access - none. Our Eur70 hotel room in Transylvania had free wireless access, as did our Eur65 hotel room in Istanbul and our Eur180 hotel room on Mykonos. But this hotel, at Eur220 for our room, has no access at all.

Luggage Pick-up - we waited 40 min's at the management office, being told "5 minutes" again and again. We finally grabbed our luggage and walked to the hotel as the guy who was supposed to meet us had turned off his cell phone and neither the managment office nor the hotel manager had any idea what had happened to him.

Credit Where Credit Is Due: The Russian girl at the hotel front desk really tried to cheer us up, showing us several other rooms we could have (all were in poor condition) and even bringing breakfast to us on our patio well after the cut-off the following morning. We assured her that our anger wasn't personal toward her, she was great, it was the hotel owners and management we were upset with.

Net net is that Santorini is very expensive and perhaps you can't find a better place to stay for "just" $300/night. Our suggestion though would be to either find more money for a better hotel or simply go visit another island. We wouldn't stay at this place again if it was free.

We arrived and there were at least 5 flights of rocky stairs down to the property (big packers be ware). Our rooms were direclty above and below the overchlorinated pool which was very loud and smelly. The rooms smelled like mold and the smaller room only had a full sized bed. The bathroom looked like a bad bathroom in a gas station. We wound up moving hotels we were so miserable.

We stayed at the oia mare for a week. We could not have been more pleased with our stay. The hotel is located in a very convenient location. Its located in oia at the sunset point and the hotel overlooks the amoudi port . It is located within walking distance (3 minutes by foot) to the main street, which has all the shops ,galleries, resturants, bars, etc. Along the port is a wide selection of nice fish restaurants that you can walk to from the hotel if you take the stairs all the way down ,but its better to come up by taxi. We stayed in a superior studio . The room and bathroom were nicely sized. The decor was pleasant and for the most part, the amenties in the room were pretty new.

The staff at the hotel was very professional and accomodating. All in all, we had a very pleasant stay at the oia mare villas. I would strongly recommend considering this hotel for your next stay in santorini.

“Honeymoon in Oia”

My wife and I stayed at Oia Mare and Amoudi Villa (Ecorama manages the operations of both hotels) for our honeymoon during the end of October. We found the Ecorama staff to be very accomodating to our needs and requests. Our first stop was Amoudi Villas which has a great view of the Amoudi Bay. Our room upon checking in was recently painted and was emitting very strong fumes. When we stated that we couldn't stay in this room, they provided another room for us. Being that we were visiting in the off season, the new room wasn't ready to accomodate us, so they had to send someone to clean it. Once in, the conditions of the room was spacious and clean, not a typical experience in Athens. Aside from this minor inconvenience, the few days we were at amoudi was great. The atmosphere by the bay makes for a very romantic setting. The tavernas along the bay serve fresh seafood and the owners are extremely friendly (a small plate of cheese and olives with Ouzo was on the house).
Oia Mare was also a very pleasant experience. The hotel is about a 1/4 of the way down the Caldera and has a spectacular view. However, we requested the honeymoon suite with a jacuzzi tub. Unfortunately, the jets of the tub was filthy and when turned on, black gunk (looked like seaweed and dirt) came shooting out of them. Although the tub was unusable, the rest of the room and facilities were clean and the staff was extremely courteous and professional. As a result of not being to use the tub, we recieved a discount on the room to that of a standard room.
Lastly, they employ a few people to help with carrying your bags and, if you stay at Amoudi Villa, provide you with a ride from the hotel to the village of Oia. They were very nice and reliable. We had to leave at 4:00am to catch our flight home, the man who helped us was at our door on time and carried our extremely heavy luggage (we couldn't resist all the bottles of wine, and olive oil) up to the top where we would catch a cab. Overall, we had a very good experience staying at both locations and were captivated by the view each one offered. We had a great time and hopefully we'll be back.
