“Nice but exhausting”

Mystique

Decided I would take a chance with Mystique, despite it being brand new and having no reviews. It was a beautiful hotel and our room (Vibrant Suite # 14) was decorated very nicely. It was clean and comfortable. I found the staff to be very friendly and extremely hardworking. They immediately took care of anything we needed. Mystique also has a good location, right down the road from the walkway through Oia. It also has its own parking lot across the street.
That being said, there were a few negatives:

1) Our bathroom, which was large and attractive (with great, big towels) had the lowest mirrors I have ever seen. I'm talking belly button level, so basically utterly useless. I had to do my hair and makeup in the bedroom (another couple I met said they didn't have this problem though).
Also the tub was hard to get out of and is an accident waiting to happen.

2) The entire room had not ONE available outlet. I had to unplug the cordless phone to charge the camera, cell phone, etc.

3) The worst of all.....the steps!! There are SO many, even for Santorini. I counted almost 50 to the reception and another 30 to our room (I think). The 50 are those horrible, old, steep, crooked, stone ones and they are BRUTAL. It was so hot too when we were there, forget doing hair and makeup....we were sweating puddles.

I'd say if you aren't in pretty good shape, avoid Mystique.

“Views from the Mystique”

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Mystique for 5 nights in the beginning of June. We were picked up at the airport in a nice van by the hotel and taken 25 minutes to the Oia where the hotel is located.

It was very late at night, so we did not get to see the view until the morning, but we definitely noticed the unbelievable amount of steps to get around the hotel.

The rooms are cave-like as some of the other reviews mention, but some are worse than others. We stayed in room 1 which was the highest room at the hotel and had an upstairs seating area and two separate decks with chairs.

There are huge jacuzzi tubs in the rooms, however be forewarned they take approximately an 45min-1 hour to fill up. We did use ours though and enjoyed it.

The staff is very helpful especially with dinner reservations and suggestions. We never ate at the hotel, as it was always very quite and we like to find the best restaurants when we travel. The hotel/restaurant across the main road, Anemomolis, is great for lunch.

Everyday they bring a large fresh fruit plate to the room, which was nice because we never woke up early enough for the free breakfast. They give you glasses of champagne upon arrival and a bottle of a strange sweet liquor with dried fruits.

Over all the room was pretty, simply decorated but did feel "Greek," and the hotel was very nice. There were definitely minor glitches that I am sure will be worked out in the upcoming months, but it is evident they are really trying.

There were a few things that surprised us. Its very difficult to ship anything from the hotel as the only carrier on the island is DHL and is very expensive. There are no movies other than the rather strange foreign few they offer in the lobby, so bring your own dvds.

I do highly recommend getting a car as it is nice to drive to Fira for dinner or shopping and go to the beaches during the day. The roads are really not that dangerous compared to the islands of St. Barths and or Capri, and we really enjoyed having that freedom.

Overall it was a nice hotel, but not extremely luxurious. Its more simple, and understated luxury. The views from the hotel are phenomenal.

Having recently stayed at the Mystique for six nights I would say that the location is excellent, rooms are very clean and have nice amenities and the staff is youthful and eager to please. The hotel opened on May 15 and it was evident that some punchlist items were still being worked on while I visited but it was not a distraction. The two things that I wasn't terribly fond of was the number of steps that had to be navigated up and down to the hotel (of course it is Santorini and this is common with most of the hotels) and the pool is on the smallish side (no swimming laps here). I would not recommend for older individuals with bad knees or hips, etc. I also would remind most readers of reviews on foreign properties...these are not Four Seasons Hotels and they are indicative of what you find in the host country so style and amenities will be different. In essence this is why we visit other countries, to experience something different. All in all I rate an "A" for effort and a "B" overall. My guess is that the hotel will need to tweak their pricing down a little for room rates and bar prices.

“Mystique is great...but with time will move toward perfect”

Stayed at Mystique in late May after a wonderful holiday in Mykonos. The property had been open for only about two weeks when we checked in. We had requested ferry port pickup and transfer from Fira to Oia. We were met at the dock and driven the 25-30 minutes in a very comfortable Mercedes SUV and offered bottled water for the trip.

One of the first things you'll encounter when arriving at Mystique is "the decent". Mystique has 18 traditionally built "cave" rooms right in the middles of the cliffs overlooking the caldera. To get to the office for check in you have to decend some pretty steep stairs - which of course you have to ascend if you want to get back up to town. If you are are like us you will immediately feel the need to double your tip for the bellboy who has to make this up/down trip many times a day with luggage!

There are only 18 units and the resort feels very secluded since it is well below the street level of the road into Oia. There is a guest-only restaurant, a small pool and common lounge chair area - though we saw many if not most people using the private terrace areas of their rooms (as we did).

The room itself will be very startling when you first see it - it is literally a cave. Our suite had a set-back bedroom with living room and large bathroom with a full size jacuzzi. The room was completely white - everywhere. Being brand new it had that nice modern look to it but trust me, its a different feel. A few other comments:

Staff - Antonia is the GM and she is fantastic. I saw her every morning at 7am and she was working at least until 11pm every night. She and her staff will do anything for you and are very attentive. They all speak perfect english. Communicating with housekeeping or the bell staff is a bit more challenging...but that is to be expected.

Food - We never saw more than 3 or 4 tables in the restaurant being used at a time. Very quiet, awesome views, reasonable service. Again there were ramp-up issues like the staff not having some of the wine selection or not being sure about some of the menu selections. We only ate dinner there once and breakfast once (the menu shows $55 EACH for breakfast though it seems to be included in most room rates).

Views - Having traveled all over the world, I have never seen such perfect views as I did from my room and terrace at Mystique. We had panoramic views of the caldera and could see all the way across. Only one bad weather day...the others were perfect. So peaceful and relaxing.

Location - you are only 5 minutes from the pedestrian walk into Oia, with lots of shops and restaurants. We NEVER had a bad meal at any of the places we ate, which included 1800 and Ambrosia. Even Neptune was a nice, simple place for a good greek meal and a bottle of Santorini wine. We got crazy and did the walk of the "path from Oia to Fira". Don't believe the "it takes 90 minutes to walk the 6 miles". It took us nearly three hours and we had to climb over 3 big hills - but the views and the experience were great. Oh yea....we took a taxi back.

Minor stuff - little things bugged me (mostly because of how expensive the rooms were) and most were attributable to the property being new. Our room door dragged on the floor and made an awful racket. Some of the electronics didn't work, and trying to get the staff to get the jacuzzi working was a challenge to say the least....but again all little issues.

Kids - simply put, there aren't any as I believe the resort doesn't allow kids under 14. For us...that was a nice touch because the other Starwood resort on the island, Vedama, is a family destination.

Summary

Overall its a great property and a fantastic location. Its not perfect and for $500-700 a night you want perfect. As a rabid Starwood guy if I wanted to go back to Santorini i would probably seek out Mystique again...though I would check out some of the other traditional hotels and houses in the area as alternatives.
