We went to Mystique for a romantic weekend in late July. Before booking we had examined all the luxury boutique hotels in Oia and decided to stay there mainly because it was brand new and a member of the luxury collection of starwood (we thought it would be some kind of reassurance).
When we arrived there we were delighted. The views is simply amazing as everywhere in Oia (although there are other places in Oia with rather better views). The hotel is brand new and it shows. We had a basic suite which was rather small and decorated in neutral colours with really good taste mixing raw materials with modern elements.. Actually it was more of a large room but it didn't really matter since we had our own veranda overlooking the caldera which is what is really important in Sanorini.
The cons now. The service was unbelievably slow. Everybody is very polite and eager to assist you in every way but it is oblvious that they lack training. They simply don't know how. For example, we ordered cocktails at the pool at three different occasions and it was always taking them at least 45minutes to bring them ! A salad took an hour. And we are talking about a hotel with only 18 rooms. However, I think it will get better with time. Another thing is the pool which is more of an oversized bathtub.
Overall, the hotel managed to make us feel at home and made us relax. Definitely a positive experience.

Stayed at Mystique for five nights with my boyfriend. We were in room #8--it was new, clean, and beautifully decorated. (I prefer understated elegance when I am on an island!) And of course, our view of the caldera was outstanding. I can't wait to go back to mystique.

“Fantastic Place - Heaven On Earth”

Mystique

I felt the need to write this review given some of the various critiques by prior reviewers and also because of the amazing time I had at this resort.

The hotel from check-in to check-out was nothing but superior in every aspect. The pick up from airport was in an air conditioned mercedes van with a very pleasant driver. Check in went very smooth as we were greeted with champagne while our room was being prepared (only had to wait half hour while we were given a nice tour of the resort).

We had a great room that had panoramic views and a great veranda where we could sunbathe or just relax. The room was very spacious given what greek island room sizes tend to be like and the bathroom was also huge. We loved the modern amenities such as flat screen TV, free wi-fi internet throughout, dvd player and stereo (which plays throughout the suite including bathroom). Granted some verandas are more private than others but after looking at some of the other hotels in Oia, Mystique, given that it is lower on the mountain, is the most secluded. We also spoke to a local person who knew all of the hotels and said Mystique had far better rooms than Katikies (she said they were smaller and run down and old). I am VERY glad we changed to Mystique.

The wine cave was also fun where we had a great wine tasting. The staff was very friendly, not intrusive and was there to get anything we needed. Someone even went to several different stores to look for a specific power converter that we needed.

As for some of the criticisms - the steps are not bad at all. Perhaps if you have a disability or are extremely out of shape the walk up might be a challenge but we found it to be fine and if you want to stay in Oia, steps are unavoidable. You are on the top of a mountain so this is expected. If you dont want steps you may need to check out a more flat island.

Pool size: perfect. If you want to do olympic sized laps then perhaps this isnt the place but I didnt see any pools in Oia that size and frankly it adds to the charm. There were never more than 4 people in the pool at any one time given the amount of rooms. We used it to cool off and for that it was amazing and the view from the pool was breathtaking.

Jacuzzi - it was huge and yes it does take a while to fill up but what can be expected??? The staff said they would be glad to fill it while we went to dinner which we did twice and we came back to our room to a lovely , filled jacuzzi with a window where we could look out into the caldera while relaxing.

I honestly couldnt find anything wrong with this place and perhaps if i had to, the 55 euro per person breakfast is expensive but it was included in our room so it didnt bother us.

I am probably missing some of the highlights but this is a place I would definitely go to again without question.

“A true gem”

Mystique

27 Jul 2007

My family and I just stayed three nights at the Mystique. I can only tell you that it was nothing less than wonderful. In fact, I have never written a review and I felt compelled to write one about the Mystique after reading the somewhat mixed reviews. Granted the Mystique has a large number of very steep steps...but so does every place in Santorini...that is the charm. Granted the tubs are so large that it takes a very long time to fill. But the facility is truly a five star boutique hotel, contemporary, clean, and the staff was extremely attentive and went out of their way to do anything they could for you.

We have travelled all over the world and I was concerned I was not getting the type of accommodations I was looking for. Rest assured the hotel is wonderful, the setting is perfect, and the staff knows how to service. Enjoy. It was the highlight of our trip.

Prime (exceptional) location, very calm and very beautiful views including from the individual balconies at each room. Perfect for a resting stay.

The so-called cave "suite" we had (close to 600 EUR a night) was however just a room (ok, a traditional cave) with a sofa in addition to the bed: in total, more or less of the size usually expected for a "single room " in a five stars hotel. But the room was well equipped (nice LCD TV, DVD etc) and with good quality stuff (the bathroom materials were nice). Our "suite" was supposed to have a Jacuzzi: indeed the clay bathtub was equipped with 6 streams but we were told upon our arrival that it would not be possible to use it , unless we make a specific request to the reception at least 30 mn before. Too cumbersome. Same to take a bath (impossible, you have to ask). So we just had showers.

The staff was welcoming (and most of them friendly) and harworking but unexperienced. We actually wasted a lot of time just because they wanted to be "helpful": ask for a telephone number and they will want to call for you but that takes a day ; go to the bar and ask for an ice cube, they won't give it to you but bring a jar 30 mn later with enough ice cubes for building an igloo; when we arrived for the first time, it took 20 mn to bring a set of handbags from the reception to our bedroom. However, they found us a very nice boat trip in the Caldera with free transfer.

The restaurant was good, classic for a 5 stars hotel, offering "French-international" cuisine. I wish it offered more local food and the fish seemed to be frozen, not fresh. The wine list was however a bit disappointing and the waitress hardly knew anything on Santorin's wines. Still, the scenery is really beautiful and this is one of the rare good, calm and quite restaurants in Oia.

The real shame was the breakfast. 55 EUR pro capita and you get a menu from which you should order what you want to eat. Like lunch or dinner. But unlike lunch or dinner, you usually (well, we) want to pick up a dozen different things when having breakfast in a hotel. And here, you have to order that dozen things one by one. So the waitress was impatient, I got my croissant 15 mn before I had a knife, we never received the jam and butter, had to yell for coffee refilling and finally went out with the feeling that we had just eaten an omelette for 55 EUR. Poor value for money. We did it once and then took the habit to go to a lovely terrasse in Oia with breakfast for two at 10 EUR each. If I can give an advice to Mytique: make a buffet at 30 EUR and offer an addiitonal menu. People will actually spend much more money in your hotel than they do now, and be happier.

Overall a good experience, but could be better if the hotel management was a bit more skilful. We had three night there, two would have been enough.
