We enjoyed the last couple of days of 2007 and brought in 2008 on the breathtaking island of Santorini. We were lucky to stay at Aroma Suites which really gives the best perspective of the island and views. Even though it was winter and the majority of shops & restaurants were closed, that magic view is always there to behold. We were blessed with blue skies and mild days for the 4 days we were there. Yes it was very quiet, but you could still find places to eat and shop. My husband & I didn't miss the hordes of people, but our 3 teenage kids did!
Our room was the quadruple cave house , with an extra bed. There is a small kitcenette which is just a sink, fridge and hotplates(no oven or microwave). There weren't enough utensils/crockery/cutlery for our family which were especially necessary as breakfast wasn't provided in winter. The bathroom has a hand held shower with no shower screen and was a bit tricky to master. It felt musty and damp in the bathroom which obviously has no natural ventilation being deep within the cave. The room was large enough but unfortunately only a curtain separated the main sleeping area from the second bedroom. One of our children was unwell and coughed all night which kept us all awake.
We didn't get to meet the famous Fanes who was taking a well deserved break, but were well looked after by his brother who also spoke excellent English. On the second morning when the brother enquired as to how we all slept, we told him that our daughter wasn't well and was there any spare room available for her? A quick phone call to Fanes resulted in our daughter being given her own separate room with ensuite for absolutely NO EXTRA COST. We were overwhelmed by such kindness. I think this gesture sums up how professional and caring Fanes & his brother are. OK the place was quiet & the room wasn't in use, but to give it to us for free was something special.
Back to the rooms - we were really pleased with the accommodation despite the matters mentioned earlier. We bought some disposable cups etc and did manage to make a few meals. Both rooms had great charm and when you venture out - the views are spectacular. The second room allocated was very small, but had everything a couple would need - including a better shower than the cave room.
Aroma Suites is in a brillant postion being close to central Thira, has enormous character, is well appointed and run by genuinely caring people - all situated on one of the most beautiful places which we call our little piece of heaven!
