OK, I have to admit a bias since we are frequent visitors to the deer mt inn and we even had our wedding there (which 4 years later people still talk about the food, service, and ambiance as resulting in the best wedding they had been to in a long time) and all guests who filled the Inn were most impressed throughout their stay (and surprised by the reasonableness of the room rate compared to other B & Bs in the area).
after my last visit for dinner and speaking with someone who never heard of this wonderful restaurant I decided I needed to take the time to write why I love this place. my only fear is that it will become packed and I will not be able to get a reservation, but Danielle (the owner), Shamus (the chef) and Irene (the main waitperson) deserve the accolades. the food is expertly prepared (the homemade pate, pear salad, crusted mahi mahi are some favorites, but everything is good). Shamus prepares lamb chops so perfectly that we have stopped ordering them anywhere else for we always wind up being disappointed; others just do not measure up to those at the deer mt inn. What makes the food even better is that the 3 course prix fix menu is a bargain. we always feel like we are getting a course for free since the prices are so reasonable. best part is we always have leftovers for lunch the next day and typically share one dessert and take the other home - a great way to extend the pleasure!
besides the great food, the deer mt inn is a restaurant from a bygone era. It is in a former estate and set at the end of a picture perfect long tree-lined driveway, although just a few minutes from main street in tannersville, it feels like worlds away. as you drive up the hill from tannersville you are surrounded by magnificent old homes from the grand days of the catskills (although the old stone church at the corner feels more like ancient Ireland). The inn is warmly decorated and has a beautiful deck and stone fireplace so it is always our first choice for dinner whenever we are in the area, regardless of the season. fortunately, we own a second home so our visits can be frequent, we do travel a lot and dine out a few times a week and have been hard pressed to match the deer mountain experience. it is a gem.
