We stayed there for 2 nights only at the Merville Beach (I'm a Mauritian and have a flat on the island... but wanted to spend some great time in a nice Hotel during my stay - a special gift to the special person accompanying me)... I chose the deluxe room (bungalow one) as I know this hotel and the bungalows are well separated for the rooms which are in a block (on the other side of the reception). There's private alleys leading to the beach from the bungalows and I haven't seen too many other clients, felt like there were no one (and it was high season :-P)
The Deluxe bungalow was beyond expectation - In fact, the bungalow isn't individual as there are 3 rooms per bungalow (2 on ground floor and one on top) but well separated from each other and I have never seen the other guys (I heard them by times though...). Noiseless air condition, lovely thatched roof that could be seen inside too, very large queen-size bed (2m x 2m) were much appreciated. The bathroom had both tub and shower (and 2 lavabos) - I'm used to business hotels only and this time, it was just so great to have such spacious room (I think it's over 35 m2). And it was very clean, just a bit old at some places - We had a wardrobe that didn't close properly... That would be the only dark spot for the room. There was satellite TV too, with both French and English channels...
The service was just great too. How cool was that: At evenings, a lady came to do the bed before going to sleep (just removing the sheets.. It's the small things that make you think you're in heaven). When checking in, the beautiful lady (Neeyah, I think...) spoke in a very fluent french and English (which is usual in Mauritius but even the Mauritian that I am was impressed by her excellent accent and vocabulary)
There's no private sea in Mauritius (by law) - This hotel is situated in a naturally enclosed part of the island making it hard / impossible for hawkers, locals... to come and swim! That was why I chose this hotel and not East-coast Hotel like La Pirogue, Hilton, etc... I wanted to rest... and no surprise - We could sunbath in peace and leave our stuff in our towels on the beach while swimming. I loved the idea of having coconut trees, beach long chair, blue lagoon... on the same photo and just 3 meters from each other - It was just great! Many local activities were free: snorkeling, glass bottom boat, kayaking, etc... You'll have to pay for big game fishing, swimming with dolphins, etc... The rates are very affordable - Think how much you'll pay for that dream in Europe. And the people accompanying you are genuine professionals and very nice guys. I could see that they took security was important here, unlike most places of Mauritius - We went diving (snorkeling) in a lovely spot (what an experience that was... great site, lovely colored fish, corals...) It was supposed to be 20 minutes in water, err... we were back nearly an hour as no one was in a hurry - And of course, the skipper did not ask for any extra, he was happy making the hotel clients happy... Again it's the small things that make you know you're in a special place and being treated with great care. Also, during the whole stay, no one begged for tips as I've been used in our countries. I think it's the policy of the Hotel...
We booked a half-board stay there and had some excellent food at breakfast and dinner. For breakfast, you have buffet and you can eat till 10:00. There's both French (sweet pastries, pancakes, fruit juice, bread, home-made jam, coffee...) and English (Tea, sausages, bacon, egg, omelette, cheese...) choices. You can also (like greedy me) make a mix of both! You can also have some local fried stuff! It's all yummy. Dinner was themed buffet - We had Italian on one night and Mauritian on the other. I'll talk about the one I know best / very well, the Mauritian one: There was the variety and you could have a taste of the different local specialties. Even if for me, it wasn't the best of the best I've had, I have to admit it was very good and superb. I have known much worse which I liked... so food at the Merville Beach is really worth it...
On an occasion, we had to eat lunch (lunch for me is at noon.) - It proved to be a bit expensive (for the Mauritian me) but it was the equivalent of 20 euros - So up to you to approve if a very wide variety buffet of fresh vegetable and fresh fish / meat... and drink at 20 euro is overpriced or not??).
During our stay, we also went to the spa. By the way, the hammam, jacuzzi, sauna are free too, like the local sea activities! And to be cared and massaged for over 45 minutes in front of the beach (hearing the waves and nothing else.), guess that was some nirvana moment :-) I fell asleep... All rates are available in a small booklet in your room (or just ask by phone from your room, it's the 2223 I think - A nice person will tell you all you need to know, book in advance if you are interested).
The taxi service provided by the hotel is ok - Just ask at the receptionist counter and you'll have a car within 5 minutes waiting for you there. The rates there too can be read on a board - As no taxis have meters in Mauritius, it's often decided prior to jumping in the cab... but here, no surprises and honestly, it's ok and not "that" expensive, for example it's 100 rupees to go to Grand-Baie. It's less than minutes only and it's the equivalent of 2.50 euros !!!
On the whole, I'd say that my stay at this hotel was above average and I had an awesome time there. If you go to Mauritius for the beaches, then you need to know that the best beaches are in the North (then the West...). It would be a pity for you to pay more for 5 star hotels on the South or some parts of the East coast, yet with better service but definitely not a better beach (where you'll have to wear shoes to get in the water). This "3-star Plus" makes you think you are in a 4 star, if not more... and the beach is just excellent, very nice, white and fine sand...
