Me and my husband got married at Merville in February and we has a wonderful time!
The thing that meant the most to us was the hotel staff. They were really friendly and helpful and made all of our wishes come true!
We paid for a standard room but were given the superior one as a 'wedding present'. The room was perfect - right next to the beach, it was spatious, the bathroom was pretty big. Yes, the window frames are old and should be changed, but that is just about the only thing.
The rooms are really clean and they changed towels twice a day. You also get beach towels at the beach and you can exchange them for clean ones whenever you want.
The beach is really beautiful and there are always enough sunbeds. The watersports are free and all the guys are really friendly.
The location is great, Grand Baie is really close - we walked a couple of times, except it can be dangerous (no pavement!) so I guess it' s better to take a bus or a taxi.
The food to me was really good. Yes, I've had better but this was definitely better than average! We were on halfboard and I don't think going all inclusive would be worth it (but that depends, some people need their lunch at 12).
As for the drinks, I agree with everybody else - they're too expensive. We bought water and fruit at the store in Grand Baie, it's much cheaper.
Now for the wedding: Everything we wished for was organised by Vanessa (one of the staff) and she was great. She did everything with a smile. She aranged the bouquet, we chose the music together, the exact location, the cake....... and it was just so lovely, she had everything under control (she even talked to the photographer for us when he was late, even though he wasn't from the hotel). Also I had my hair done at their spa and they did a wonderful job! All in all it was the perfect wedding. I must say however that we are not really too demanding...
After the wedding they prepared a special dinner at the beach for us and we got a huge breafkfast brought to our room the next morning...
There were also a lot of small gifts and nice gestures during our stay (because we were newlyweds)...
Because the cyclon was really close to the shore on the day we had to leave, they closed the airport. We were able to stay till the evening in our room for free until the airport was opened again which was also very nice of them...
Like I said...it was the perfect wedding and what made it perfect were the people from the hotel and the lovely beach (and of course most importantly the perfect husband:).
As for the people who are used to five star hotels...Merville is probably not for them. For us, the things that matter the most when we rate a hotel are cleanliness, friendliness of the staff and the location. And all of those three things were perfect.
