If you want a charming getaway at a seaside town without an attached beach Edenton is probably the perfect spot. Architectural details abound, the city encourages walking and enjoying from the street and the porch.
Shopkeepers and historical docents are happy to spend time chatting and bringing you up to date on local happenings, restaurants and events.
There are a variety of bed and breakfasts. You will want to stay in town as the walking is straight and delightful. In the spring, when I visited the flowering trees, daffodils and gardens were coming into their own. In the summer I would dare say it would get hot but the porches all have rockers for passing the day or a cool evening. There are complimentary boat slips for a several days stay near restaurants and local shops. Art galleries offer local artists, both temporary and permanent.
I had heard that it was like a southern New England and I would agree that that could be the case. It is out of the way, a destination of it's own accord but worth a day or two if you want to get away or a week if you need some serious revitalization.
