We stayed in one of the cabins/cottages with our 3 boys after a backpacking trip. We probably didn't see Highlands or Mitchell's at the best time as it was raining cats & dogs the whole 24 hours we were there. But I have to say I was disappointed. The jacuzzi (the main reason I booked Mitchells - for all our tired hiking muscles) was steamy & shabby & too bleachy; we didn't stay long. The cabin was adequate but just very plain & cheaply built. For this (good) price I don't need granite countertops, but take a look at the bathroom photos I'm posting -- yick! The staff were adequate but not overly friendly. Would not return. Sorry, Mitchell's fans.

My honeymoon was a complete surprise! I didn't know where we would be going, since I had told my husband that I wanted one part of our wedding where I didn't have a hand in it, and could just sit back and enjoy myself.
Well, did he come through with this place! Not only is the town of Highlands adorable, accomodating and beautiful, but our stay in the Pine Cabin at Mitchell's was wonderful. With a full kitchen, we were able to cook meals ourselves (when we weren't sampling the local divine restaurants), we relaxed on the deck during the day and played with the owner's cat, Boots, and even were able to rent movies from a local store and watch them in the spacious living room of the cabin! They have a great continental breakfast in the mornings (cereal, oatmeal, pastries, coffee and tea), and the staff is super nice and very helpful in any local questions you might have.
If you need a place to fall into a ridiculously comfortable bed, or just enjoy your time away from the real world, go to Mitchell's!

“A Very Pleasant Stay in Oak Cottage”

We shared the Oak Cottage with our close friends during a long weekend in Highlands. By no means fancy, the two-bedroom, two-bath cottage was comfortably appointed and very clean. The Oak had a full kitchen and a common area for dining and conversation. It was the perfect "home away from home" for us because we really wanted to spend time with our friends and avoid searching for and spending lots of time in restaurants. Luckily, the super market is just two minutes away in a shopping center. The center also has a Subway, about the only "fast food" in town.

The path to the cottage is a bit spongy and has about twenty steps (down and up) before you get to the porch and rocking chairs. Guests with physical disabilities will want to choose another cottage or stay in the lodge. Also, the Oak is about 100 feet from Dillard Road, but traffic noise was never a problem. In all, we had a very pleasant stay.

We had a cedar lodge room and the pine cottage here. The lodge is modern with high beam ceilings(at least on the 2nd floor), gas fireplace and a balcony. It was very nice. The pine cottage is their nicest and is on its own lake with a deck and rocking chairs. It also had a gas fireplace, 2 bedrooms and a jacuzzi. The cabins are a little more rustic, but are nicely done. We sat out at the pavillion every night making roaring fires in the outdoor fireplace even though it was cold out. We come back here every year we like it so much.

Looked for a relatively inexpensive place to stay in Highlands, NC over Labor Day weekend. Highlands is relatively expensive, but since we're not so particular, we looked for a moderately priced place.

Was pleasantly surprised at Mitchell's Lodge. Stayed in the Cedar Lodge, Room 24, a corner room, rustic looking, but very comfortable. Log furniture with two queens, kitchenette, a balcony overlooking the grounds, a wonderful indoor hot tub that was privately reserved only, a beautiful pavillion overlooking a lake, and for those staying in the winter has a fireplace. Our room also had a fireplace. Unfortunately, it didn't get cold enough to have a fire.

Service was great. The staff could not have been more helpful, very generous with their time. Nice continental breakfast, basic, but fine. The location was great, right around the corner from downtown Highlands, and close to waterfalls, hiking, great, great restaurants. Try Paoletti's and Lakeside.
