First, What The Cavalier is not about. You learned to drive so learn to park. No valet parking.
You have the whole ocean as far as you can see, and it should be warm, so there are no hot-tubs or even jetted bathtubs. The rooms have no mini-bar you are going to have to make a stop and provide your own "liquid" refreshment. Theres no onsite restarurant but then there certainly no shortage of excellent places to eat within minutes walking distance from the motel. You may find a bit of sand in your carpet during your stay(esp after a day or so) being as you are just seconds away from a wide beach with no sand dunes to obstruct your view. (Thats right, You step out of your room oceanview and two steps down you are barefoot on the beach.)
Try that with any of the other higher priced motels or resorts on OBX. That is so not gonna happen.
The ocean front rooms were large and clean and well kept. Somehow over the last 50 or so years management has managed to keep the charm and rustic feel of the rooms true to their initial vision. Full size refrigerator two queen size beds cable TV and connecting door to the next room as we were with daughter and her husband and grandchildren which allowed us to visit without any obstuctions between us while still maintaining a bit of privacy when it was needed. This and a view out the large picture window of the ocean. The beds were actually quite comfortable. The pillows might could use a update but then I change pillows at home frequently so I suppose that is just my own personal preference. Not their fault. Just me.
We had to rearrange our flights due to Tornados in Dallas and arrived a day early and somehow the front desk got us in a night early just minutes after we arrived. Let some of the bigger boys in their high rises try that. Thats real customer service and Maudie and I appreciate the effort put forth on their part.
Had no problems with any unruly guest at all. None. Every one we encountered was just as nice and respectful as you could expect. The staff from the front desk to the lovely ladies who somehow managed to keep the sand we were tracking into the rooms by the buckets were nothing but wonderful. As we were checking out we were lucky enought to meet the owner and he seemed like he really cared that we had a good time and actually apoligized for the cool weather.A really nice guy and it was our pleasure to visit with him for a few minutes.
As we are from Texas and it was our first trip to the OBX we really didn't know what to expect this Easter weekend so it goes without saying we were so pleasantly surprised that this whole weekend with family went off without a hitch and we all had a real nice trip. Kudo's to all at the Cavalier. We will return. You can count on it. As far as we are concerned this is the only place that we will stay at on the cape. We recommend to others to give it a shot..
Thanks Johnny and Maudie
