My family and I (about 14 of us) went to Grandfather Mountain on June 23 and had a great time. The mountain is about 30 minutes or so from Boone and the entrance fees to the Park are well worth it. At the middle of the mountain is the wildlife exhibit, which is a great place for kids to see animals up close and in their “normal” habitat. So many zoos and other places keeping wildlife need to take this place as an example of how to effectively show off wildlife but yet doing so in a way that makes for a wonderful life for the animals. There are several black bears, two cougars, some deer, and a bald eagle. Besides the excellent exhibit, the workers or naturalists provided great information and answered as many questions as they were fielded. The visitor center provided an area to get out of the rain, as there is a restaurant, store, and a theatre where visitors can watch movies about the mountain. After spending some time on this part of the mountain, we headed up to the swinging bridge. The visitor center at this point was closed as a new building is being constructed but the Swinging Bridge is a real sight to see and produces some great family portraits! The end of our trip (the highlight) was when we drove further up the mountain and then proceeded to hike the trail to the top of the mountain. I believe the trail was the Black Rock Trail, and it was very very rugged as it consisted of several ladders, rope climbs, and parts of the trail where there were narrow openings. We made it nearly to the top before it started raining, and the roundtrip hike was around 4 hours. I have hiked many trails in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and this was definitely the most difficult and got rather scary towards the top. There are several neat caves that can be seen along the trail and a few places to get out of the rain in case inclement weather begins. All in all the place was fantastic and when combining this with outlet shopping and Linville Falls, Boone North Carolina is a great vacation spot!
