Well, my husband and I went to Murphy, NC for the first time in April 2006. We were seeking a location that reminded him of his home, upstate NY, but without the distance from our current home of FL. Murphy was recommended by friends who had property in the north GA area. On our first visit, we fell in love with the area of Murphy and actually bought property. Needless to say we ended up builiding on the land and have been up to the area a total of 9 times since that first visit.
What we love about Murphy is that it is rural with the beautiful mountain vistas yet relatively close to major cities (Atlanta- 2 hours away, Ashville- 1 hour and 45 minutes away and Chatanooga-2 hours away). Plus there are plenty of outdoor activities that we enjoy (hiking, boating, horseback riding, rafting, fishing, train rides, etc.) in the nearby areas. It also has enough of a change of seasons to satisfy my husband as he really misses that from NY.
Overall, I would recommend Murphy to people who are looking for the tranquility of the country and the beauty of the magnificent Smoky Mountains.
