My boyfriend and I spent four days on Ocracoke Island last summer, and we had a wonderful experience staying at Edwards.
We stayed in an efficiency room with two double beds and a kitchenette... a sort of "junior suite." We were really happy with the fact that we also had a screened-in porch to hang out our towels and bathing suits and a place to leave our sandy shoes.
The room was spotlessly clean, the beds were very comfortable, the A/C kept the room very cool, and the kitchen was stocked with basic dishes, pots/pans, and silverware so we could make our own lunches and breakfasts every day. The room was also furnished with 1950s/1960s-type beach decor, which I really liked because it felt very homey and old-fashioned.
The inn was staffed by the husband and wife owners and their adult son, who treated us with total courtesy and kindness. They also provided us with bicycles for a small extra fee during the days we were there.
The hotel is ideally located in town... off the main drag but close enough to walk or ride bikes everywhere. You only need a car to go to the beach (we did try riding our bikes there one day, but I don't recommend it because it's along a busy highway, and with the minimal shoulder on the road, I was sure I was going to be flattened by a car at any moment).
In sum, I highly recommend Edwards of Ocracoke for a relaxing, quiet, and cozy vacation stay. Plus the deserted and pristine beaches at Ocracoke are simply amazing.
